THE OFFICIAL RULE BOOK
We were in a youth meeting in Fort Myers, Fl when I was sharing truths from the bible. A young man about 16 said “how do you know the Bible is true?” This was a great question.
He was into sports and was a baseball player. I responded with this, “When you are up to bat and there are five strikes and six balls on you and the pitcher throws the ball…”
He interrupted me, and said, “you can’t have five strikes and six balls in the game of baseball.”
I said, “Well in my rule book you can.” Then I said when you get to fifth base and the pitcher tries to call you out…”
He interrupted me again, and said, “There isn’t any fifth base.”
I said again, “Well in my rule book you have a fifth base.” He continued to ask as I continued to share.
Then I said, “How do you know your rule book is right and mine is wrong?”
He said, “Well, it is in the “official rule book.”
I said, “Oh, then your rules must be the right rules then if they come from the “official rule book.”
After this, I went on to explain that the Bible is God’s “rule book”, and that is the official book to go by for life. It became clear to him through this illustration that he understood this truth. Then I witnessed to him about salvation and he received the Lord that night as his Savior.
You see, there has to be an “official rule book” in order to know how to play the game for every sport, and the “official rule book” for life is the Word of God. It is where we go to see what is right, and what is wrong, but it has to be read to know how to “play the game.” The problem is many persons like this young man have never read the “rule book”, the Bible, but think they know what it says. Just like this young man knew baseball in and out because he had studied the “rule book”, every Christian must study the Bible to understand God’s “game plan” for your life.
We put some quizzes in our newsletters every day. It is a surprise to me how many do not know their bibles. (Yes, I see all of the answers). I am not trying to put anyone on the spot, but if you don’t know what’s in the Bible, you certainly will fail at the “game of life.”
When is the last time you picked up your bible and truly studied it? When is the last time you had a passion for it like you do for sports and games? With the end times at hand, it is a good idea to know the rules of the team you are playing on. After, all, it is the “official rule book” for life.
