Parsha Talk
In the second of this week's double parsha, Kedoshim, we read what R' Akiva described as the Torah's fundamental rule: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. Hillel paraphrased this commandment thus: "What is hateful to you, do not do to others." While these two concepts are similar, one seems to extend the notion further than the other. From the desk of the STEAM Lab
This week in STEAM we continued observing the stages of our butterflies' metamorphosis and learned more about spiders and other insects like ants! Kindergarten, 1st grade, and 2nd grade are learning about pollination and how to take care of our earth! Happy Earth Day everyone!

Drip Irrigation
The 3-5 grade students in Mr. Riklin's STEM class continued working on their garden by learning about drip irrigation and its usefulness in gardening. They practiced seeing how water flows from a recycled rain bucket through PVC piping by using gravity to "shoot" it out. Once they understood the flow, they made holes in the PVC for the water to flow through as the pressure pushes out a little water from each location. This small amount of water will give those areas of the garden the amount of water needed to sustain it for a limited time. The students have thoroughly enjoyed this project and look forward to putting the irrigation system to work as our sprouts begin to grow.

Delicious Moons
7th grade has started the astronomy unit in Ms. Goldstein’s earth science class. While learning about how the moon and Earth interact and affect each other, they got to recreate the phases of the moon with Oreo cookies.

Roman Mosaics
Roman mosaics come to life in 3rd grade art this week. The students learned how to mix plaster for Greek frescos and create Roman inspired paper mosaics. The students are most excited to paint into their poured plaster shapes.

Little Hands Can Change the World
Students in Morah Tsippi's ECE2 class stamped their hand prints in blue and green to make an Earth heart for Earth Day. They learned about keeping the beautiful world that Hashem gave us nice and clean.

Wedge Art
Students in the middle school BIMA elective are continuing their work on their Jewish history-inspired fabrication wedges. The finished wedges will be part of a CIJE (Center for Initiatives in Jewish Education) collaboration with Jewish day schools across the United States and will become part of a digital art installation.

Counting, Building, and Writing Oh My!
Morah Aviva's ECE4 class is eagerly counting the Omer daily! Morah Aviva explained why we count the Omer and that it is called Sefirat Haomer in Hebrew. Everyone is counting the days until we reach Har Sinai! They also have some future builders and architects in their class. Last, the students are also up to the letter “Tt” in the alphabet! The students enjoyed drawing illustrations and writing words that begin with “Tt” in their journals.

Guest Visitor
Fifth Grade has started a project, where each child researches a question that they want to answer. When one student wanted to know more about the reaction of helium in space, Mrs. Schneider turned to the experts. Barry Tobias, who works at NASA, zoomed into the classroom. After the initial question was answered, the students enjoyed asking all their space questions!

Love
Students in Morah Alissa's and Morah Sandy's ECE3 class learned all about the mitzvah of loving our fellow Jews as ourselves in this week's parsha. The students practiced soft touches and kind words. They also made an ahava (love) picture that is inspired by the sculpture at the Israel Museum in Jerusalem.

Do you want to see puppies?
It is National Canine Fitness Month and Sources of Strength Physical Health Month! The high school group is raising money ($504 to be exact) for a chance to host a puppy party at RMBA on Friday, April 30. The group is promoting physical health both amongst our 2 legged and 4 legged friends. The group is partnering with Houston Cares, an animal rescue organization.
