Research, Publications and Presentations
The Chronicle of Higher Education published Associate Professor Carol Holstead 's article,  "Want to Improve Your Teaching? Start With the Basics: Learn Their Names," on Sept. 11. 

The University of Vienna will host a July 10-12, 2020, conference titled “Evolutionary Perspectives on Public Relations, Strategic Communication, and Organizational Communication.” The Call for Papers lists Professor Chuck Marsh as “perhaps the foremost contributor to this area, having published works on evolution and mutual aid; indirect reciprocity and reputation management;  and the relationship between cooperation, justice, and public relations.” The deadline for abstracts is Nov. 15.

Assistant Professor Hyejin Bang’s  paper “Leveraged brand evaluations in branded entertainment: Effects of alliance exclusivity and presentation style” has been accepted for publication in the  International Journal of Advertising .

Associate Professor Yvonnes Chen was interviewed by The Christian Science Monitor staff writer Harry Bruinius on a piece that investigates vaping as a culture that substitutes one health risk for another. The first brownbag research session of the fall semester will be Friday, Sept. 27, in the Dole Human Development Center conference room. This session will focus on promotion to full professor. Lunch will be provided. Please RSVP to ttlee@ku.edu by noon on Wednesday, Sept. 25.

Application for J-School scholarships open now
Each year, students are eligible to apply for School of Journalism scholarships. All students admitted to the school are encouraged to apply. Students who receive KU renewable scholarships should note that the School of Journalism will likely be funding those scholarships during their junior and senior years. Students receiving renewable scholarships should still apply for journalism scholarships; additional funds may be available. Applications are due Dec. 1, and scholarship recipients will be notified in April 2020. Scholarships are for the Fall 2020 and Spring 2021 academic year.   Apply here  (click the red Sign In button at the top, then log in with your KU online ID and password). Paid J-School student positions available
Paid student positions are open now in the J-School. We are hiring a student writer , who will primarily write stories for the Jayhawk Journalist alumni magazine, a student recruiting assistant , who will work with the school's recruiter on messaging and events for prospective students, and an office assistant , who will work the front desk in the Resource Center. Deadline to apply is Sept. 27.
Apply now for the Pulliam Journalism Fellowship
The 2020 Pulliam Journalism Fellowship Program welcomes applications now for next year's program. Twenty winners nationwide will be selected for a 10-week internship from June 8 through Aug. 14, 2020, in Indianapolis and Phoenix. Learn more and apply here.
KU Alternative Breaks is taking applications now
Alternative Breaks provides students with hands-on service learning and volunteer opportunities in the community and across the nation, providing annual volunteer trips for approximately 800 students and serving over 50 volunteer organizations. Applications are open for the Winter Alternative Break, Jan. 12-18. The deadline to apply is Sept. 29. Learn more here.

Save the date: J-School Generations, including XD Creative Jam
Mark your calendars for Oct. 24-25 for J-School Generations! On Oct 24, alumni will visit classes, participate in the J-School Career Fair and team up with students for fun, games and prizes in the evening. On Oct. 25, the Adobe team will bring an XD Creative Jam to KU, and students will compete virtually against teams from K-State. In addition to networking with our amazing alumni, there will be lots of prizes for students during events on both days. Learn more here.

Events will commemorate suffrage centennial
The  Centennial Celebration of the 19 th  Amendment  kicks off at KU with the Suffrage Anniversary Launch Event at 7 p.m. Sept. 24 at the Dole Institute of Politics. The free event will feature suffrage historians Associate Professor Teri Finneman , Jinx Broussard and Candi Carter Olson discussing the history of the suffrage movement and voting issues that remain today. The event will set the stage for a year of discussions related to the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment. Learn more here.

Teams get two hours to solve the problem, using design thinking and user experience principles. Join a team: There is still space open on both Teams and Topics. Sign up here. Teams will give you an opportunity to solve multiple client challenges using Adobe software. This a great way to build your skills and your portfolio. Topics is a set of four, three-week tutorial and project-based lunch-and-learn style sessions designed to give you basic skills in Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop and Premiere.​

The Resource Center is open noon-5 p.m. Sunday and 5-8 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Get help on projects and checkout equipment.

J-School Career Fair set for Oct. 24
The J-School Career Fair for the fall semester is set for Thursday, Oct. 24, at the Adams Alumni Center across from the Kansas Union. The fair, scheduled for 1 to 4 p.m., will be held in conjunction with the annual J-School Generations event. A photo booth will be available for students to have professional LinkedIn photos taken. After the fair, students are welcome to join KU alums for networking and games at 4:30-6 p.m. at the Alumni Center. Approximately 30 organizations plan to attend, sharing internship and job opportunities, and J-School Generations alumni will be on site for networking and mentoring. Jayhawk Journalists at work in the NFL
2019 J-School graduates Mitch George (right) and Charlie Sides took a photo together during the Cincinnati Bengals vs. San Francisco 49ers games Sept. 15 in Cincinnati. George is a football communications intern with the Bengals, and Sides is a video operations intern with the 49ers.
Brian Sieman , 1998 J-School graduate, moves from doing the radio play-by-play for the LA Clippers to the Clippers' TV play-by-play on Prime Ticket. He has been with the team for 12 years.
