Elizabeth Schuyler (Eliza) Hamilton may be unknown to you unless you've seen the current Broadway production about her husband, "Hamilton," or read Ron Chernow's best-selling biography about him and his role in the formation of our country.    

 

Historian Elizabeth Kahn Kaplan will share Eliza's remarkable story with us. Born during the French and Indian War, married during the American Revolution, and an eye witness to the establishment of the United States, Eliza was a descendant of wealthy and influential Dutch patroon landholders near Albany. She fell in love with, and married, a penniless but brilliant, handsome, and ambitious immigrant orphan from the West Indies, and aide to General George Washington. Alexander became the right-hand-man of President Washington, established the financial footing of the new nation as its first Secretary of the Treasury, and then was cut down at the age of 47 with his reputation diminished by his political enemies. Eliza outlived her husband by 50 years. Determined to salvage her husband's reputation, before she died at age 97 she'd accomplished all that she'd set out to do, and more. more  

Art Café & Sale - October 12, 11-3 at the Library

Beginning September 21, our fall exhibit will feature art and artifacts donated by Brenda Reiss from the collection of items she and her late husband Sidney found on their many travels. The show will feature an eclectic mix of statues, paintings, jewelry, ephemera, and even a pair of Richard Murphy's shoes! Items will be available for purchase during the exhibit.

Art Café & Sale is the culmination of the exhibit and sale, featuring a Café setting in the yard with seasonal desserts to enjoy on site or "To Go." Savories and sweets with coffee, tea and cider. So, please save the date. More information will follow.

Want to brush up or improve your French with a conversation hour? Claudine is a native French speaker, born in Paris and raised in Europe; following a 30 year Government career abroad, she chose Stone Ridge to retire in. Culture, medicine, travels, and anything/everything culinary are favorite subjects-which she would love to share and exchange in French. The program is offered on the third Tuesday of each month.

Beginners are welcome to join our Mahjong group. We have two sets available but welcome additional sets if available to loan. Register on line on the calendar or at the Circulation Desk in the Library, or just walk in. We meet every Friday at 10am in the new event space.

Every Saturday

The Stone Ridge Library Knitters meet every Saturday morning from 10am - 12noon. All ages and experience levels can join us and drop-in knitters are also welcome. We each bring our own supplies and do our own work, but one of the best things about us is that whatever obstacle or confusion you might encounter, you're likely to receive as much comment and advice as you need to get where you're going with a project. Some of us can help toward the repair of knitted or crocheted items too.

The group is sociable and lively, and our conversation and sharing is just as wide-ranging as our projects. We are especially interested in the UFOs (Un-Finished Objects) that members bring in and love the show and tell of projects under way and being finished, new or old, simple or complex. Though knitting is our love and mainstay, we graciously adapt ourselves to stray crocheters and those of us who simply must take to the hook when the spirit moves. We share articles, magazines and books on knitting. Donations of yarn to the Library get made up into items for sale at the Library Fair and during the winter holidays for the benefit of the Library. Some of us also knit things for local hospitals or for the U.S. troops.
