2013 and 2016 ACS CCP™s: It's Almost Time to Recertify

If you attained your Certified Cheese Professional (ACS CCP ) designation in 2013 or 2016, you are up for recertification this year!

Notifications regarding the process will be sent out early in September. As you may know, ACS transitioned to a new member database last year, so if you are an ACS CCP , please make sure that your account on our website ( cheesesociety.org) is up to date and current - that will be the system we use for notifications.

If you have any questions, contact Josh Hendrickson, ACS Certification Manager at [email protected].

Legal View: Workplace Employee Disputes

There is little question that the workplace is where most people spend the majority of their time. Equally true is the fact that today's workplace is often filled with stressful situations and sometimes complex relationships. It is only natural that periodically disagreements will arise between employees. Many times employers simply ignore such situations expecting that the employees will work it out. However, given today's increasingly diverse workplace it is possible that an employee conflict could create potential legal liability for the employer.

Attorney Rich Alaniz reviews disputes in the workplace:

Letter from the President

Gratitude is for Cheese Lovers

A big thank you to all of you who attended, sponsored, supported, and volunteered at the ACS Annual Conference in Richmond, VA. We could not put on such a great event each year without you! A special thank you to Cathy Gaffney who served as board President for the past year, and whose wise counsel I will value as I move into the President's role with her as board Chair.

It is my belief that you can never express too much gratitude, nor offer enough recognition, to those who are of great service. To that end, I want to use this space to once again thank the Conference Host Committee for the amazing commitment and passion they have shared with ACS:
  • Louella Hill and Mike Koch for their outstanding leadership as 2019 Conference Co-Chairs
  • Devin Lamma, ACS CCP™, Noreen Mayer, and Evan Talen, ACS CCP™ who were behind-the-scenes rock stars as this year's Official Conference Cheesemongers
  • Tara Harmon, ACS CCP™, Allison Smith, and Scott Stroud, ACS CCP™ for rallying the troops to pull off a phenomenal Festival of Cheese
  • Ryan Foote, ACS CCP™ and Jake Sigl, ACS CCP™ for ensuring the safe handling of hundreds of products as this year's Receiving Manager and Inventory Manager respectively
  • Jeffery Mitchell, ACS CCP™ for selling out the Cheese Sale in record time to raise over $12,000 for ACE Foundation scholarships
  • and Brie Hurd and Rich Rogers, ACS CCP™ for their leadership as Chairs of the Education Committee and Judging & Competition Committee, respectively.

These members along with hundreds who gave time and energy in Richmond are the true stars that make up our bright ACS constellation. I can't wait for the excitement of ACS Conference 2020 in Portland, Oregon!

Sincerely,

Marianne Smukowski,  President

Letter from the Executive Director

Connections

I am excited to welcome Marianne Smukowski to the helm as ACS President for the coming year! Marianne is a strong advocate for cheesemakers, and a strong leader for ACS who values the important work we do to advance the industry. Marianne is also a great "connector" - able to connect people, ideas, and information through her consensus-building style.

The concept of connections was at the front of my mind in Richmond as I once again saw that the ACS Conference is truly a place where members connect to share ideas, information, challenges, and the joys of cheese. There are few events and few professional communities where the feeling of connection is so palpable. One place this really rang true was during the opening Cheese 3 Talks. John and Kendall Antonelli of Antonelli's Cheese connected with over 1,000 attendees in the audience through their open sharing of the challenges they have faced personally and professionally growing their small business. I saw these connections again as friends shared a beer at the Cheese Crawl while supporting the ACE Foundation; and again when an Open Networking session on proposed EU Tariffs led to an impromptu, on-site meeting of industry leaders and ultimately an ACS Member Update to disseminate the important outcomes from those discussions.

I encourage all of you to value these connections and take time to stay in contact with those with whom you connected in Richmond. Certainly, these connections are valuable to your business and professional life. But more importantly, value them for the intangibles they bring to your life: the serendipity of clicking with a like-minded thinker; the humor of a shared experience; the camaraderie of realizing someone is facing the same challenges as you. ACS is unique because of the part each one of us plays in making those connections to build a strong cheese community.

Sincerely,

Nora Weiser, Executive Director
