Scarce work in any edition. First published in
Paris
in 1819, the first American edition of Francoeur's original French work was translated by William Bentley Fowle in 1825, "with alterations and additions to adapt it to the use of schools in the
United States
." It was the first drawing book ever introduced into American schools and went through many editions through the nineteenth century each enlarged over earlier editions. In addition to what is in the first edition, the second edition of 1828 added a Preface to the Second Edition and added nine pages of "Questions to Part I" and an entirely new section at the beginning of Part Second on "Elements of Linear Perspective" with questions following, and a page of explanation at the end describing the sources of the illustrations and a note regarding the practical use of artificial French chalk on boards painted black, and a second plate. The third edition of 1830 greatly expanded over the second edition and added a third folding plate with 21 more figures and a further expansion of the text (12 unnumbered pages between pages 54 and 55) in the form of an Appendix to Part I for instruction for drawing with instruments. Loosely inserted in this copy are eight sheets of beautifully executed ink drawings in perspective (some with shading, one with color), one accompanied by ink notes in shorthand. Spine slightly darkened, pages intermittently browned, else very good.

Leipzig
edition of the Civil-Bau-Kunst is an amalgamation of much of seventeenth century architectural knowledge. Though Goldmann published treatises on fortifications and the proportions of columns during his lifetime, this, his major work, appeared posthumously. The manuscript was completed before his death in 1665, and it was later edited by Leonard Christoph Sturm, who shared Goldmann's passion for mathematics. The importance of mathematics in architecture, the use of a module in building, and the theory of proportions are all stressed in Civil-Bau-Kunst. It also contains an illustrated, multi-lingual glossary of architectural terms, a brief history of architecture, and a series of plans and elevations of model buildings, many of which are folding. Early leaves thumbed; waterstain on frontispiece and title page; minor, sporadic foxing; covers lightly sunned; tips worn.

Of three states of the first edition, this is the most desirable with proofs and etchings on india paper. Rutter's account of Fonthill, an opulent mansion built for William Beckford by James Wyatt, remains the best contemporary account of the structure. The text is an elegant description of the interior and its furnishings. Our copy has an additional plate of the south-west view of the house, not called for. Plate I is a folding plan of the grounds (26 x 20 inches.) This deluxe issue has all plates on india paper. Plates VI-VIII are hand-colored; a copy of Plate VII on standard stock is also included, as are additional variant proofs before lettering of Plates IV, XI-XIII. There are also many wood cut vignettes on india paper throughout the text. Rebacked with original spine used as an overlay. A collection of 24 moderately sized homes with colorful style designations such as "Ranch Houses," "Cape Cod Types," "Georgian Influence," "Charming English Cottage," "Two Way Plan," and "The Moderns." Each house design comes with floor plans, a color exterior view, dimensions and description. The National Plan Service published many sets of house designs which were provided to builder's and contractors across the nation. This catalogue, subtitled "Home is where the heart is," was printed for the Central Lumber Co. in Reading, Pennsylvania, and is already focused on the post-war generation of homes. In addition to the house plans, there are sections on the basic features in each house - kitchens, bathrooms, basements, utility rooms, hobby rooms, closets, built-ins, etc. Very good.

Each design has a floor plan, elevation, and detailed sketches, on a tinted lithograph and identifies the architect. With 82 house designs, each with exterior view, floor plans, specifications and description which includes the twenty-eight prize designs selected by a jury of the following eminent architects: Dwight J. Baum, Edwin H. Brown, F. Ellis Jackson, William T. Warren & Julian Peabody. Names of some of the designs include

, and Santillane for the Spanish; Brattoboro and Pittstown for the Colonial;
