Grow with Google
at Tiverton Public Library


Patrons can now register for a free series of classes designed to help job seekers and small business owners use Google to better their careers and grow their businesses!
 
Job Seekers: Learn how to use Google Apps to search for jobs, build a resume, and submit a job application online.
 
Business Owners: Find customers online with Google My Business, Google's free service for managing your online presence and improving your visibility in web searches.
 
All participants must first complete the Introduction to Google Apps class. This hour-long course will be offered four times in September (see dates below). Participants will create a free Google Account and use it to access apps like Gmail, Google Drive, Google Docs, and more!
 
Classes run Tuesdays (6:00pm) and Wednesdays (12:00pm), September 10th-18th. Registration is required and space is limited. To register, call the library at 401-625-9796 or email Patrick at pelliot@tivertonlibrary.org

Special Exhibit:
Extraordinary Women of the East Bay


The Tiverton Public Library will host a very special exhibit in September that recognizes and celebrates 60 women who have made a difference in their East Bay communities. 

Roger Williams University Archivist Heidi Benedict has created this special exhibit that recognizes women from Barrington, Bristol, Jamestown, Little Compton, Middletown, Newport, Portsmouth, Tiverton, and Warren. Sixteen local historical societies, museums, and libraries have contributed to the exhibit. 

Extraordinary Women of East Bay will be on display throughout the library until October 16th. Susan Anderson, Outreach and Education Coordinator of the Tiverton Historical Society, will give a special presentation on some extraordinary women from Tiverton, some of whom are featured in the exhibit, on Monday, September 16th. See below for details.

ADULT EVENTS
Retro Game Club: Sega September
Tuesday, September 3rd, 6:00-7:30pm, Community Room
Retro Game Club returns! This month, the Tiverton Public Library celebrates all things SEGA - one of the biggest video game companies of the 80s & 90s. Come play the games that gave Nintendo a run for its money and discover why gamers used to say "SEGA does what Nintendon't."

Decades of Sega hardware will be on display and ready to play, including:
  • Sega Master System
  • Sega Genesis
  • Sega CD
  • Sega 32X
  • Sega Saturn
  • Sega Dreamcast
Afterward, be sure to browse the library's wide selection of Xbox and PlayStation games available to borrow, as well as the many board and tabletop games patrons can enjoy inside the library. Game on!
CreaTiv Crafts
Thursday, September 5th, 3:30-4:30pm, Community Room
Join us on the first Thursday of every month for some fun and creativity. This month, we'll be making sand art terrariums. 

All materials are provided. Please register to reserve your spot.
Summer Concert Series: Panoramic View Band
Thursday, September 5th, 6:00-7:30pm, Library Lawn (or Community Room, in the event of rain)
That summer feeling doesn't have to end! Join us on the library lawn for some more sounds of summer with the Panoramic View Band. Bring a chair, blanket, and dinner - or purchase dinner from Little B's BBQ on site - and enjoy a night of live entertainment. A fun night for the whole family!

Free Movie Night:  On the Basis of Sex

Join us for a showing of On the Basis of Sex (2018; Rated PG-13; 2h) on the big screen!  

Popcorn and drinks will be provided; outside snacks are also welcome.
Introduction to Google Apps 
Tuesdays & Wednesdays, September 10th-18th, Community Room 
Join us as we explore Google's free suite of online tools! From setting up an email account in Gmail to creating documents using Google Docs, this beginner's class is designed to help you make the most out of your new Google Account. 

Participants will create a free Google Account and use it to access apps like Gmail, Google Search, Google Docs, and more! By the end of this class you will know how to:  
  • Set up a password and secure your Google Account.  
  • Read and compose emails with your new Gmail account.  
  • Search the web for information.  
  • Create and save documents using Google Docs.  
  • Use Google Drive to store and organize files in the cloud.

Cookbook Club

A book club with a tasty twist! We read cookbooks and come together to share the tasty recipes that lie inside their pages. This month, we'll be sampling recipes from cookbooks by Yotam Ottolenghi

Pardon Gray Day

Look for our librarians at Pardon Gray Day on September 14th. Some amazing teen volunteers will be aiding families in a scarecrow-building activity. Librarians Deb and Meg will be nearby, with free giveaways and fun activities under our pop-up tent. Stop by and say hi at this FREE town event.

Extraordinary Women of Tiverton
Monday, September 16th, 6:00-7:00pm, Community Room
What do a Pocasset sachem, an ice cream maker, a librarian, a farmer/rug hooker, a school teacher, a chef, and a mother of eleven children have in common? They are all extraordinary women of Tiverton. 

Come hear about their lives, presented by Susan Anderson, Outreach and Education Coordinator of the Tiverton Historical Society, and then tour the Extraordinary Women of the East Bay Exhibit and learn about others from neighboring communities. The exhibit will be on display in the library through October 16th.
Adult Knitting Meet-Up
Tuesday, September 17th, 5:30-8:00pm, Learning Center
A casual meeting for knitters looking to work on their projects with others who enjoy knitting and crocheting. Join us on the Third Tuesday of the month to meet and socialize with local knitters. Must bring your own projects and supplies.
Quilt Club
Wednesday, September 18th, 5:30-7:30pm, Learning Center
Do you like to quilt? Then come and quilt with us on the third Wednesday of each month, from 5:30 to 7:30 pm. Whether you're a beginner or a seasoned pro, you are welcome to come and work on your own projects while socializing with fellow enthusiasts. Get project ideas, ask questions, and share tips and advice. Must bring your own projects and supplies.

The Third Way: What Is 'Assisted' Living?

This presentation focuses on how seniors and their families can better understand what assisted living is, dispelling the myths and fears that people may have about senior living and aging in place. Presented by Paul Jones of Care Concierge of New England. Click here to register.
Free Movie Night:  Rocky Horror Picture Show

It's that time of year again! We're getting into the Halloween spirit by watching this cult classic, with a performance by a live cast from the RKO Army of Rhode Island.

Painting Landscapes
Thursday, September 26th, 4:00-6:00pm, Community Room
In this two-hour session, local artist John Irwin will take you step by step through the process of starting a landscape painting and deciding when it is finished. This class is free, and all materials are provided.

Adult Game Night

Join us for a laid-back, after-hours game night at the library. Play one of our games, ranging from board-building strategy to trivia-style games and more, or bring your own!

Free People Think and Read Freely! - An Escape Room Experience

A group of concerned citizens have formed a group, the Society To Understand People's Interests & Desires, to better protect the public from inappropriate ideas and materials. This group has locked up all your intellectual freedom rights. You have 45 minutes to break into the box and gain back full access to your rights. Tiverton Senior Center Book Group

Please note that this book group will now be meeting on the Second Tuesday of each month. We will be reading Too Late to Say Goodbye, a true crime story by Ann Rule. 

Copies of the book are available at Tiverton Public Library and in the office at the Senior Center.

The YA for Adults Book Club is a book discussion group for adult readers who enjoy reading Young Adult/Teen Fiction. This month, we will be reading Truly Devious by Maureen Johnson.

Spirituality and Politics Book Group
Wednesday, September 18th, 2:00-3:00pm, Trustees Room
'Spirituality and Politics' is a new book group to engender conversations about topics of faith and politics. For the first gathering, we will read Shameless: A Sexual Reformation by Nadia Bolz-Weber. While this is a book primarily about gender identity and human sexuality, it also gives a broader picture of Christian theology than what one finds in the newspaper headlines. 

For those of a particular religion or faith - or none - this book group seeks to provide a forum for participants to connect and discuss important spiritual and social topics.
Union Library Book Group

September's book choice is the 2019 Pulitzer Prize winner The 7 1/2 deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle by Stuart Turton.


Books are available for check-out at the Union Library. New members are always welcome!
You are welcome to join any book group. Stop at the Information Desk for a copy of the book to be discussed. Only the Cookbook Club requires registration.
TEEN EVENTS
Teen Advisory Board

Come hang out and discuss titles that you are reading, tell us what you would like to see happen at the library, and eat some snacks! Earn a community service hour for attending!

YA Book Club for Adults

Interested in a traditional book club? Want to talk about books? This is a traditional book club intended for "older" teens and adults.

Anime & Manga Group

The monthly Anime & Manga meet-up is starting up again! Join other interested teens in lively discussion, anime viewing, craft making, and snack eating! Also, help us with our long-term goal of planning a cosplay event!

Action Packed Movies at the Library
Saturday, September 21st, 12:00-2:00pm, Community Room
Bring your lunch and join us for a dine-in showing of The Goonies (PG) projected on the big screen in our Community Room. Free popcorn and candy provided! 

Our Teen Movie showings are part of our Teen Program offerings but are open to all patrons.

CHILDREN'S STORYTIMES
Storytime Adventures
Who: Children ages 3-5 years

When: Mondays, September 16 th -October 21st. No storytime October 14th.

Two Sessions:  10:15-11:00am &  11:15-12:00pm

Where: Children's Activity Room

What:   Join Mr. Monkey and Miss Meg for a storytime adventure. Each week we will explore a fun and interesting topic as we share stories, sing songs, play games, and create a piece of art.

Limit: 18 preschoolers per session. Registration is not required. Seats will be distributed on a first-come basis.

Teeny Tiny Tales
Who: Children ages 1-2 years

When: Wednesdays, September 18 th -October 23 rd  

Two Sessions: 10:15-11:00am &  11:15-12:00pm

Where: Children's Activity Room

What: Join Mr. Monkey and Miss Meg for stories and songs during this literacy-based playgroup for young patrons. The morning will begin with a short book and group activity, followed by time to play with our new friends.

Limit: 18 toddlers per session. Registration is not required. Seats will be distributed on a first-come basis.

Babies & Books
Who: Children ages 1 week-12 months-- Stories and activities have been chosen for non-walking infants.

When: Thursdays, September 19th-October 24th

Time: 10:00-10:30am

Where: Little Readers Book Nook in the Children's Room

What: Join Little Library Bunny and Miss Meg for nursery rhymes, songs, finger plays, and stories, while introducing your baby to the wonders of language.  

Limit: 16 babies per session. Registration is not required. Seats will be distributed on a first-come basis.

Storytime Reminders:

  • Storytime is cancelled if Tiverton Public Schools are closed.
  • Please keep children exhibiting flu-like symptoms at home to rest and recuperate.
  • All storytime participants need to be accompanied into the program room by a caregiver.
  • Younger and older siblings are welcome to attend storytime.
  • During storytime, the program room is a 'device-free' zone. Please turn off your cell phone.
