Ninth Grade Expedition Update!
On their "Journey to the Western Gate," the 9th Grade explored the coasts of Jalama and Gaviota and visited Bixby & Hollister Ranches. We heard tales around the fire from residents such as 95-year-old, lifelong rancher, Bill Pate, and from ranch managers and nature conservancy stewards in charge of managing tens of thousands of acres of mind-blowing landscapes and precious resources. Students performed sand crab science experiments and marine debris analyses on Cojo beach, heard about land use issues from atop Little Drake's at Hollister Ranch, and learned about aquaculture from the staff at The Dos Pueblos Abalone Farm. In addition to hosting the First Annual 9th Grade (and faculty) Backgammon Tournament, staff and students enjoyed many hours in the ocean and around the fire in preparation to lead the Fall Expedition this October.

Meanwhile back on campus...
The History Alive class was transformed as students simulated Charles Lindbergh’s 1927 flight across the Atlantic. With flight goggles secured, students entered their cockpits and piloted their "Spirit of St. Louis" across the Atlantic. While following visuals and a narrative about his flight, students experienced Lindbergh's amazing feat along with his near disasters and his final landing at Le Bourget Field in Paris. Bien joue’!

Any orders that get turned into the office at this time should include a $5.00 late fee.

CAREER STUDY WEEK
This week 7th and 8th graders chose their jobs for Career Study Week. Now they need to contact their employer to briefly describe the program and set up an appointment
to meet in person for an interview.
Students need to have their job lined up and confirmed by October 9.
Before contacting the employer, make sure you and your student have read pages 10-13 in the CSW workbook.
Students should
take their CSW workbook with them to meet with their employer
and fill out the Student’s Job Confirmation Sheet on page 46.
Once they have met with their employer and confirmed the job, students should log
on to Google Classroom (Career Study Week 2019) and complete the
Job
Confirmation Sheet for Kara form.
Students may call their employer during school hours using the office phone or their
own cell phones (use them only IN the office). If the job does not work out, contact
Kara@sbms.org ASAP for help securing another position. Any questions or requests
for additional information for employers can also be sent to Kara.
Thank you!

WEEKLY SUSTAINABILITY TIP ♻️
Trash vs. Recycling: When you see something that says compostable, put it in the SBMS trash bin, not the recycling bin.

FROM THE PARENT ASSOCIATION
PA MEETINGS
If you weren't able to attend the first PA meeting last Tuesday, click
here
to view the video on the SBMS YouTube channel. A few parents had asked about electronic curfews and online homework. Here is a good resource that will help to answer your questions on how to deal with these issues:
Mark your calendars:
next PA Meeting will be October 8, 8:30am social, 8:45am meeting, Lotus Theater.
PARENT FALL SOCIAL—SAVE THE DATE
Our
Parent Fall Social will be October 24, 6:30-8:30pm at Third Window Brewing Co.
Come socialize with other SBMS parents while the kids are away on the Fall Expedition.
Appetizers will be provided by the PA and drinks can be purchased at the bar. A percentage of the proceeds will be donated back to SBMS.
HOMECOMING COMMITTEE MEETING
For those interested in being part of the
Homecoming Committee, there will be a meeting next Tuesday, Oct 1, at 9am
at the outside picnic tables by the parking lot. Homecoming is a long-standing tradition here at Middle School. Many hands make for little work, so come find out what it's all about and help to make this year's Homecoming a great one!
Have a great week!

BIANCA'S BLURB
Have you checked out Commonsense Media yet? If you haven't, I wanted to mention that they also do a great job of suggesting appropriate BOOKS for your kids to read. Many of the SBMS kiddos know that I am an avid reader of "YA" novels...but did you know that the term "YA" is not really a genre, but a target range for the reader and often reflects the age of the protagonist?! YA stands for Young Adult and a lot of books labeled as YA are more appropriate for high school level kids, not middle school. Below are a couple of my favorite websites to find information about choosing books for teens in addition to ways to encourage your teen to read more.
- Commonsense Media - you can select by age and it will give you a sense of the content. Commonsense will alert you to things like sex, alcohol/drugs, consumerism, violence, language, educational value, role models, etc.
- Goodreads - I LOVE Goodreads. I add books that I have read and want to read into organized lists. It's a great way to track your reading. I also sign up each year for a Reading Challenge, which is a self-set goal of how many books I want to read per year. You can friend other readers, get book recommendations, chat with authors and even enter book giveaways!
- Barnes & Noble and Amazon offer great recommended reading for teens as well. Follow their book clubs or book lists for suggestions.
- Join the Santa Barbara Public Library! You will receive amazing information in their newsletter with special events, classes, author talks, etc. Download their app (Hoopla) to your device and you can borrow ebooks and audiobooks for free!
- Be a model for reading. What's on your nightstand? I'm currently reading: The Flight Girls.

I'd like to end this edition of Bianca's Blurb with gratitude. This year, Doris McPhee (alum parent) and Katie Siegel (Sammy's mom) have been volunteering in the library on a daily basis and their help has been phenomenal.
Thank you!
