Dear Parents,

Welcome to November and the busiest season of the year!

Our goal is to keep parents informed about issues that impact the health, safety, and well-being of children and teens. How can you help your student make informed choices, online and offline?

For example, did you know that 1 in 4 teens is sexting ? What should you and your teen know about social media, consent, and the law? Learn how to become the first line of defense for your kids.

This Thursday, November 7, Skadden offers its award-winning workshop, Know Your Rights, Know the Law: Sex, Bullying, and Social Media ( M-A PAC ). Parents and students welcome!

With Juul and e-cigarettes making news, come hear from the experts! Stanford's Tobacco Prevention Toolkit presents What's All the Buzz with JUUL & SImilar Vape Devices? ( Woodside , November 20). Seating is limited for this event.

Look for community education events (Las Lomitas Elementary School District, Redwood City School District) below, open to SUHSD parents, students, and community members.

Also, see information about Sequoia Strong (TM) , a new community resource guide from Sequoia Healthcare District that connects residents of all ages to free and low-cost activities and services in our area.

NEW video of The Good, the Bad, and The OMG of College Admission is now posted on our YouTube and Vimeo channels! Follow us on Instagram and Facebook for the latest in parenting news, research, and events.

A National Epidemic

Educators, parents and health officials are sounding the alarm on vaping. Here's what they're doing about it.
"Doctors, parents and teachers are increasingly concerned about teenagers using e-cigarettes and vaping devices.
While the cigarette smoking rate is 3.1% among youth ages 14 to 18 in San Mateo and San Francisco counties,  20.8% of teens in those counties vaped in 2018 , up from 11.7% in 2017. The 2018 rate of teens vaping in the county is 'alarmingly high' compared with the statewide rate of 10.9% of teens vaping."
