2020 Research & Development Grants
Arizona Commission on the Arts

Research & Development (R&D) Grants provide funding support to Arizona artists as they work to advance their artistic practice, expand their creative horizons, and deepen the impact of their work.

Who’s it For?
Artists working in any discipline who live and work in Arizona. Whether you’re just getting started or you have already experienced many career successes, the R&D Grant is available to help you take your artistic practice to the next level, including:
  • exploration of new techniques
  • experimentation with new materials or technologies
  • creation of new work
  • development of new strategies for engaging your community of practice

How much is it?
Applicants may request a minimum of $3,000 and a maximum of $5,000. Up to 30 grants will be awarded this year.

What can I spend it on?
Grant funds may be used for any of the following (this list is not comprehensive): 
  • Stipend to grantee
  • Stipends to collaborators
  • Materials
  • Travel costs
  • Technology
  • Equipment
  • Space rental
  • Marketing costs
  • Production costs
  • Documentation
  • Rehearsal time
  • Registration fees 
How do I Apply?
The R&D Grant application process is split into two stages so applicants don’t spend a lot of time doing unnecessary work. After your Stage 1 application materials are reviewed by a panel of independent arts professionals, applications determined to be most competitive according to evaluation criteria will move on to Stage 2.

Artist in Business Leadership Fellowship
First Peoples Fund

First Peoples Fund partners with Native artists who want to strengthen their business skills through the Artist in Business Leadership Fellowship Program. In this one-year, self-directed program, artists get th e technical support, professional training, and working capital they seek to start or grow a thriving arts business.
stART Mini-Grants
Arts Foundation for Tucson and Southern Arizona

The Arts Foundation for Tucson and Southern Arizona is now accepting applications for their stART Mini-Grants which provide awards of $500 – $1,000 through two alternate tracks of support: the Community Impact track or the Artist Resource track.

3rd Annual Tubac Van Gogh Sunflower Paint Out & Auction

Real sunflowers (if the javelinas and grasshoppers don’t eat them) juxtaposed against buildings throughout the historic artist colony of Tubac will be the inspiration for plein air painters during the 3rd Annual Van Gogh Sunflower Paint Out.

National Playwright Residency Program | Call for Applications

The program provides three years of salary, benefits, and a flexible research and development fund for a diverse group of American playwrights at selected theaters around the country. More than a standard residency, this initiative is an intervention into the traditional relationships between artists and institutions, as a way of reimagining what institutions might look like when an artist’s voice is at their cores.
