With perfect playing conditions on Sunday it was a pleasure to welcome teams for this year’s annual IMG Trophy. Hosted by Chris Brown from IMG London, we were delighted to see some strong team performances and individual contributions to the card. Well done to our Champions Michael Paterson and Kevin David who scored 49 points and in turn won The Trophy, an IMG goodie bag and 2 x Fourball vouchers for Le Golf National Paris – home to the 2018 Ryder Cup. 24th of August 2019 – Saturday Roll Up Results
Excellent playing conditions were enjoyed on Saturday, with 37 members using this opportunity to participate in the weekly Saturday Roll Up. Scores were not as high as previous week and George Park took first place with 2 under par 38 points. George Ball took second place with 1 under par 37 points. There was a tie for third place with Wade Droney and Lawrence McLeod both scoring level par 36 points. In order to determine third place winner, it required us to look at their back nine scores. After countback Wade took third place with better back nine score 20pts and Lawrence’s inward score of 17pts were not enough to keep him on the leader board. Last Saturday 2 players had 2s on their card. Dale McFadden birdied the 5th, whereas Bryan Thomas birdied the 17th hole to put 2 on their scorecards
Countdown to the 2019 Wyder Cup
The battle between team Scotland and the Rest of The World is less than two weeks away with teams travelling to The National Golf Club of Azerbaijan for this annual tournament. With 16 athletes participating in each team the stage is set for another epic weekend of Matchplay and camaraderie. It was the job of our Scottish Superintendent Martin McGavock to visit Quba and discuss the course condition, set up and pin placements on behalf of team Scotland. Speaking about the visit “The course is in good shape and we had a full tour with Kheyreddin Cabbarov, their course manager. The greens are running well and the final touches are being put in place for what will be a great weekend of golf. I was happy to support fellow Scot and Team Captain John Bruce with his wish for me to advise based on the strength of his players (Pins will be mostly on the right side of the greens). We wish both teams the very best.

NEW Local Rule – PACE OF PLAY for Tournaments
Increasingly we are seeing the need to manage and monitor groups that fall outside the pace of play guidelines during competition days. We have occasion when cards have been returned over 5 hours after the first shot has been struck.

Whilst we recognise that tournaments are popular the average field size is still only around 72 – 80 players. This is relatively light in numbers to what the course could take and is more dependent on the number of golf carts we have in use (again to support pace of play). With a Pace of Play guideline at 4.30 for 18 holes we will allow a further 30 minutes to give a max 5 Hour TOTAL ROUND TIME for cards to be signed and returned to the tournament team.
Further details below:
  • All cards posted after 5 hours from the start of the event (first tee shot struck) will be shown as a N/R - No Returned Score.
  • This will also apply to Cards not signed by teams who are at the clubhouse and have forgotten to submit.
  • On recording N/R Cards the events team will proceed to announce the final results of the day – out of respect for the rest of the fellow competitors and sponsors present.
  • A score is only shown on the leader board once checked and entered in by the Events Team. Whilst the use of Golf Genius is encouraged for our competitions the score is validated by two signatures on your card.
  • This amend rule will be shown on all sign up and rules sheets to avoid further confusion
  • PLEASE “Keep up with the game in front and not just ahead of the game behind”.

ACADEMY NEWS
Constraint Led Winning Drills
Some of Golf’s greatest short game players, Seve, Mickleson, and Donald, certainly didn’t over analyse when learning how to get the ball up and down. Instead they discovered for themselves fun ways of how to deal with various challenges and difficult conditions.
Over the coming weeks Head Professional Alex Day will introduce a number of short game drills to help you increase clubhead awareness and feel. Intended to promote improved impact conditions, see how you get on figuring these drills out.
The series started last week with a tricky greenside bunker shot – hope you gave it a good crack and persisted with it. This week we take a look at chipping and introduce a simple drill to help you hit more crisp chips. Being able to consistently chip to 4 feet as opposed to 8 feet will certainly improve your score. Stats suggest an 18 handicap golfer has a 65% chance of holing a 4 foot putt but only 27% chance of making an 8 foot putt.
The Drill:
Golfers legs often have a detrimental effect on their swing. When the legs are parted golfers are able to move their head which can often cause the low point of the swing to be inconsistent. By simply crossing your lead leg (left leg for a right handed golfer) over your trail leg, your balance will be compromised, which in turn will encourage you to stay centred throughout the movement. It also provides a feeling that you’re isolating the lower half and controlling the movement with the shoulders like a putt. Please see the attached video for a demonstration.
10 Yard Bucket Challenge
This weekend the Academy's latest skills challenge got underway. The task is simple – how many attempts will it take you to hit a ball into the bucket (Dreamland bin). The challenge costs just 10azn and members/guests are free to enter as many times as they wish. The golfer with the lowest score by the end of September shall receive a Titleist Vokey wedge. Can you knock the Doc off the top spot!?
