September 1, 2019: The Collective Work of Grief
Meg McGuire

Devastating news alerts can feel like a weekly occurrence. How do we cope? Our speaker, Meg McGuire, will reflect on how grief can be a healthy response to the day-to-day experience of being alive in these times. How can opening ourselves up to grief in community ground and sustain us and our struggles for justice?

Meg McGuire is a rising third year Masters of Divinity student at Starr King School for the Ministry, where she serves as a student representative to the Starr King Board of Trustees and is one of this year's Hilda Mason Teaching Fellows. She is a lifelong Unitarian Universalist, which has long inspired her commitments to social justice work and love of spiritual community. Prior to discerning a call to ministry, she spent five years working as a labor organizer with hotel and restaurant workers in New York City and endeavors to integrate her background in organizing and economic justice work into her ministerial formation. Meg holds an undergraduate degree in Anthropology from Wesleyan University and a certificate in Justice Ministry Education from Auburn Seminary.

Notes Along the Way
Rev marcus
Dear UU Marin community,

The sun is setting on my first day back in the office as I write to you. It has been a threshold day for me, crossing back from a time of rest and renewal into planning and preparing for our year ahead together. As with so many threshold moments, my heart is full, a part still lingering in the Tuolumne Meadows high country of the Yosemite mountains, a part eager and excited for our shared journey to come.

I look forward to seeing many of you this Sunday. I hope that many of you will join me and stay for the "house meetings" we are hosting as part of our work with the Marin Organizing Committee. We will gather with members of other local congregations and organizations as we deliberate about how to use our collective power to shape the change needed in our community.

Back in June I reminded you that for most Unitarian Universalists it is a tradition to gather waters over the summer and merge them together as part of our ingathering on September 8th. I asked you to collect water that symbolizes a source of your renewal -- be it from a backyard garden or a far-away mountain lake. If you haven't yet, it's not too late! Wherever it comes from, bottle a little bit of your renewing spring. I also offered you the spiritual assignment to take your relationship with renewal a step further. If you haven't yet, consider making something -- a piece of art, a simple journal entry, a nourishing meal for loved ones -- make something to name or symbolize your source of renewal. In a culture abuzz with opportunities for distraction and overwhelm, our joy and our true efficacy depend on a rich relationship to our sources of renewal.

I can't wait to hear about what has renewed you, and to begin our journey together again!

Blessings,
Rev. Marcus Hartlief

Sunset Ferry Cruise
SUMMER-ENDING SEPTEMBER 21 SUNSET FERRY CRUISE FUNdraiser is headed our way! See the flyer in the foyer @ UUCM. We are always wanting to put the FUN in fundraiser and this one is it! We sail out to the Golden Gate Bridge just at sunset time & return, all the while having a convivial time with each person's hearty hors d'oeuvres to share and their favorite beverage. Your little cooler to transport the goodies is perfect. We will have a champagne toast to begin our journey (compliments of Rich & Glynda) and then let the libations, song-singing, good times begin! This is a good fundraiser to get your friends to; it not only supports UUCM ($20 of the $50 ticket goes to UUCM, $30 for ferry ticket) but, what a beautiful, serene end-of-summer evening! The point is to share, to enjoy each other, to have fun on a ferry, and to support our spiritual home! SEND YOUR CHECK FOR TICKETS MADE OUT TO UUCM TO THE CHURCH ADDRESS (240 Channing Way, San Rafael, CA 94903), ATTENTION R. PANTER, BOARD MEMBER.
Touch of Beauty
Hello UUCMers - and welcome to a new congregational year. Would you like to volunteer one time for Touch of Beauty? If so, please let me know by return email and I will put your name on the calendar. It means that you bring an arrangement, and place it on the small white table (kept in the closet behind the piano). Know that the flowers always bring joy to people at the service!

One favor - please send two dates - a first and second choice, so I can more easily assign you to a free date.

Thanks!

Theater on the Go
Sandy Levitan, one of our newer members of UU, will be offering a theater activity, called Theater On The Go, for the fall of this year.

The North Bay has at least six live theater companies that offer entertainment, education, and enlightenment throughout the year. Sandy will be selecting up to three plays a month that can be attended together or separately.  Tickets will be purchased by the participants.

Depending on when we see the plays, we can have a discussion afterwards, especially if we have a dinner following a matinee. Or if it's an evening performance, we can meet another day/night at her house or another member's home. Meeting at UU is also a possibility.
Sandy will always be attending all of the plays assigned, but if members can't make it on a particular date, they can always go at their own convenience.  Carpooling is usually an option.

Sandy has been facilitating this activity at the OLLI program at Dominican University for 11 years. Prior to that she had been involved as an actor and director for at least 20 years.
If you'd like to join Sandy, please email her at  sandralevitan@comcast.net .
Plans will be emailed several weeks ahead.

If you are not already receiving emails from the social justice committee and wish to receive them along with information about social justice actions/rallies in and around Marin, please send your email address to:    socialjustice@uumarin.org
