UNB Geodesy and Geomatics Engineering Department seeking interested partners in the surveying profession willing to facilitate practical experiences for students
In an effort to enable students participating remotely across Canada to access practical field experience normally provided at UNB, the Geodesy and Geomatics Engineering Department at University of New Brunswick is seeking expressions of interest from members of the surveying industry to facilitate some practical activities in the upcoming year. Who Owns A River? The Question Is Tearing This Community Apart
Thanks to a controversial New Mexico rule, rich landowners are staking claim to the state's public waterways.
HUFFPOST
When Dan Perry moved from Texas to 1,500 acres in the arid reaches of northern New Mexico in 2010, the portion of the Rio Chama that ran through his property was contaminated with pollutants from the wastewater treatment plant upstream. The banks were eroded, so shade trees and shrubs no longer kept the river cool enough for rainbow and brown trout. Perry invested over $300,000 of his own money in engineer-designed erosion treatment, planting willows and alders, and restoring the natural course of the river. He worked with the governor to secure $8 million for a cleanup project. Now, the once-deteriorated stretch is a thriving fishery. Read more

Congress Continues Ligado Oversight
Last week, the House Committee on Energy & Commerce held a briefing on Ligado for members and staff of the Committee. Panelists for the briefing were: Charles Mathias, Associate Bureau Chief of the Wireless Telecommunications Bureau at the FCC; Ron Repasi, Acting Chief of the Office of Engineering and Technology at the FCC; Fred Moorefield, Deputy Chief Information Officer for Command, Control, and Communications at the Department of Defense; and Charles Cooper, Associate Administrator, Office of Spectrum Management at the National Telecommunications and Information Administration. Although not videotaped, NSPS understands the briefing was "all over the place" on the issue. Read more in NSPS newsletter

Capt. Sullenberger, PNT board against Ligado decision
GPS World
Opposing the FCC’s Ligado Decision
Not surprisingly, the primary topic at the July 1 meeting of the National Space-based Positioning, Navigation and Timing Advisory Board was the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) decision on Ligado Networks.
The meeting, virtually hosted by NASA, began with board chair retired Admiral Thad Allen reading a statement for the board’s record from Captain Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger condemning the FCC’s action. Read more

On May 27, 2020 PSC wrote a letter to the Deputy Minister, Natural Resources Canada regarding Ligado, PPP and RTN, on behalf of professional surveyors across Canada. Read PSC's letter.

Back Roads Bill: What's up with all those 'height of land' signs in the North?
Elliot Lake Today
You’re headed to your next back roads adventure and you see those distinctive green and white highway signs announcing the water flows in different directions. Strange thing though there’s never any water by the signs. . .
....
Therefore the Upper Canadian boundary was demarcated by the height of land . . . This is significant for it meant that virtually the entire province was within Indian land as defined by the Royal Proclamation of Oct. 7, 1763 which decreed therein were reserved “for the Use of the . . . Indians as their Hunting Grounds (sic).”  Read more
ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE: Minerva releases landslide hazard map of BC
Canadian Mining Journal
Minerva Intelligence, a company focused on knowledge engineering, has released an interactive and constantly updated map of B.C.’s Sea to Sky region to the general public. The GAIA Sea to Sky Landslide map uses proprietary artificial intelligence technology developed by Minerva to show landslide susceptibility in the province’s Sea to Sky region.
The map deploys artificial intelligence to assess where a landslide might occur to allow users such as geologists, homeowners and insurance underwriters to take the appropriate steps to manage this type of hazard. Read more

Multistate Disagreement over the Length of the Foot to End
In 2023 every U.S. land surveyor will begin using a single international standard
Scientific American
In 2023 every U.S. land surveyor will finally be on equal footing. One kind of foot, specifically: the “international foot.” These engineers have long measured land with two versions of the unit, depending on which state they are in and whom they work for. To eliminate the resulting confusion, surveyors will soon stop using what is called the “U.S. survey foot” and use only the international version. Read more
Charles Hapgood and the Maps of the Ancient Sea Kings
Ancient Origins
Charles H. Hapgood began his book, Maps of the Ancient Sea Kings , by stating, after studying composite maps at least partially derived from ancient sources, that ancient voyagers traveled from pole to pole. The evidence, he said, indicated that some ancient people explored Antarctica when its coasts were free of ice. It is clear too that they had an instrument of navigation for accurately determining longitudes that was far superior to anything possessed by the peoples of the ancient, medieval, or modern times until the second half of the 18th century.
The Piri Reis Map of 1513
Hapgood became interested in the study of ancient maps after reading a book on the subject by Captain A.H Mallory, Lost America . Mallory had come across a copy of the Piri Reis Map , a world map compiled in 1513 by the Ottoman admiral and cartographer, Piri Reis. He said publicly that the map seemed to show Antarctica, before it was discovered, and, furthermore, the coast seemed to have been mapped when it was free of ice. Read more
Delayed Release of the Modernized NSRS
National Geodetic Survey
NOAA’s National Geodetic Survey (NGS) is announcing a delay in the release of the modernized National Spatial Reference System (NSRS).
In 2007, NGS began planning for the modernized NSRS, acquiring its first airborne gravimeter, creating and initiating the Gravity for the Redefinition of the American Vertical Datum (GRAV-D) project and by 2008 had codified its modernization plans into a Ten Year Plan. At that time, the target completion date was 2018. By 2013, that date seemed unlikely, due to both the broadening of the GRAV-D coverage area and the experience of five years of operational planning and execution. Read more
OSTP and NOAA Announce Ocean Mapping Plans
The White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) have announced the release of new strategies and recommendations to help advance ocean exploration. These recommendations were created following the November 19, 2019 Presidential Memorandum directing federal agencies to develop a national strategy to map the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of the U.S, a plan to map the Alaskan coastline, and recommendations to streamline the permitting process for exploration of the ocean. NOAA also released this Alaska Coastal Mapping plan, which is geared towards a 10-Year strategy in support of the United States economy, security, and environment.

DailyMail
A retired land surveyor has been forced to pull off his patio door to get a 16-foot sailing dingy that he built during lockdown out of his house.
Steve Goodchild said he spent thirteen hours a day working on the boat, named barnacle, since April as he stayed at home in Paignton, Devon.
He brought it out of his home today, even pulling off the door frame to squeeze it through, ahead of its maiden voyage on Saturday.  Read more
