Historical Tidbit:
Tree Lined Central Street

Here is a picture of Central Street from the early 1900's. It is a view as if you were walking down the hill where Central School is on your left and Central Cemetery on your right. Most of these trees were lost in the hurricane of 1938.

"I had to have a garden."
We’ve had a vegetable garden every summer since 1973. This would have been our first year without a garden. I had to abandon the garden last summer when I got Lyme disease and this spring I still didn’t have enough energy to do the work a garden requires. With his torn rotator cuffs and a bad back, Randy couldn’t help either.
I watched the weeds grow and overtake the garden beds this summer and it made me sad. Last week, for the first time in over a year, I felt my energy returning and I headed out to the garden. I spent 4 hours pulling 8-foot-tall weeds out of the vegetable beds. I found some tomato plants, leggy marigolds and nasturtiums at a local nursery. I bought 40-percent-off seeds at Ocean State Job Lot for late-season greens and lettuce. I put in the tomato plants and flowers Sunday and planted all the seeds today.
As I was watering them, I spotted a big toad watching me and I realized why I had to plant a garden. It’s not so much about the yield. It’s about the smell of the tomato plants and the marigolds. It’s the excitement of watching the seedlings pop up through the ground. It’s what I see when I’m in the garden: the birds and butterflies, the toads and snakes. It’s about hearing the cardinal at dusk and watching the moon rise and the bats flying overhead as the sun goes down. It’s the sound of crickets singing as fall draws closer. Even if it’s a little late, I had to have a garden. ~ Mary Wright Julius

Preparation: the action or process of making something ready

I prepare for each day with a list goals I want to achieve. Inevitably, a monkey wrench; important conversation or spontaneous priority will side track me. I need that list to re-focus and remember what is important to accomplish.

“Give me six hours to chop down a tree and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe.” ~ Abraham Lincoln

“Your strength doesn't come from winning. It comes from struggles and hardship. Everything that you go through prepares you for the next level.” ~ Germany Kent

“Opportunity does not waste time with those who are unprepared.” ~ Idowu Koyenikan

“I believe luck is preparation meeting opportunity. If you hadn’t been prepared when the opportunity came along, you wouldn’t have been lucky.” ~ Oprah Winfrey
Inching forward, slowly improving my quality of life came from preparation, gaining knowledge and making mindful spending choices. We must prepare for the life we want, even if it's done in baby steps. ~ Jacquie
