Legacy Giving Workshop
November 3, 11:30am in the Longfellow Room
What is legacy giving? Why should you consider making a legacy gift, and when is a good time to begin planning such a gift? How do the new tax regulations affect your planning? Join the discussion on legacy giving to learn about how legacy gifts help ensure for future generations what you treasure about Hennepin. These gifts also provide significant financial planning benefits for donors and their families. This forum will highlight the concepts and strategies of making legacy gifts. The information is useful for adults of all ages!

Final Call for Submissions to the Advent Devotional!
The deadline has been extended through this weekend for submissions to Hennepin's Advent Devotional booklet, "Holy Surprises!"
You are invited to reflect on the surprising ways you see God and God's people working in the world--upending expectations or cultural norms. Or to share your hope about unexpected new movements for justice and change--or an experience that revealed itself to be a "holy moment."
Your short reflection, essay, or poem, 250 words or less, is due this Monday, November 4. Please submit to communications@haumc.org.

Thank You from The Dignity Center!
The cold came upon us quickly this fall and caught many of us off guard. A person experiencing homelessness does not have the luxury of a closet to store winter gear like a coat. Your donation of 100+ new or gently used coats will allow individuals to be warm and safe from the elements this winter. Never underestimate the dignity of a warm coat. Thank you for your extravagant generosity!

Jimmy is 95 years old.
Jimmy had brain cancer in 2015.
Jimmy broke a hip in May 2019.
Jimmy fell at home on Sunday requiring 14 stitches.
Jimmy showed up on Monday to help build houses for Habitat for Humanity.
Jimmy is one tough dude.
Join us as we discuss the faith journey of this former President and current one tough dude.

Koinonia Men's Retreat:
What Did/Do You Expect?
November 9-10, Koinonia Retreat Center
Hennepin Avenue UMC men will gather at Koinonia November 9-10 to ponder answers to that question, especially where our own lives are concerned. Come and join us for inspiration, from each other and from Koinonia's beauty. We will begin with lunch on Nov. 9 and end with brunch on Nov. 10. Price is an unbelievable $60 for three meals and the overnight stay.
Please do three things:

- Make sure these dates are on your calendar, if not already.
- Think of a guy you don't know well, maybe in a different generation, to ride with. That will increase connections and reduce emissions!

As technology plays an even bigger integral role in worship, opportunities to volunteer time and passion are growing quickly. There are current opportunities to help with slides, sound and cameras. Don't worry about any areas of expertise you have or don't have; we will provide training.

Koinonia Conversations Update
We are pleased to announce that the Koinonia Legacy Task Force has been formed and is comprised of representatives from all standing committees and Core Practice teams.
The purpose of this task force is to develop a recommendation for how funds from a sale of Koinonia will be used to further the ministry of Hennepin in ways that will move us forward in our mission. The task force has begun meeting. We will keep the church membership informed as developments arise.

Life Adventures for Seniors & Friends
Ruth Bachman: Facing Life's Challenges
November 8, 12pm in the Social Hall
Mountain climber, author and survivor advocate Ruth Bachman will bring a timeless message about the one constant in life: Change. She will encourage us to look closely and patiently at all of life’s challenges that can bring possibilities for transformation. Ruth has facilitated workshops on resilience, storytelling for healing and navigating change in a variety of settings.
Prepaid reservations are due by noon, Monday, November 4. Cost is $18 and includes lunch.

Parenting for LYFE
November 17, 11:15am in the Social Hall
Parenting for LYFE is an open, drop-in group that meets monthly to discuss all things parenting. We welcome the wisdom of parents with children of all ages. After enjoying brunch as a family, parents are invited to stay in the Social Hall to participate in our monthly discussion topic, while kids will enjoy music class in Room 105, led by retired music teacher Patricia Rice. This month, we will look at how a moving child is a learning child. Everyone knows that a healthy diet is important for a growing child, but did you know that physical activity is absolutely essential for brain development?

A charge conference will be convened on November 24 at 11:30am in the Sanctuary for the purpose of setting clergy compensation for 2020. This charge conference is required by The United Methodist Book of Discipline. Child care will be available. All members are encouraged to attend.

Interfaith Thanksgiving Worship Service

Join in solidarity with the Twin Cities Interfaith Community to celebrate God’s generosity and to express our gratitude in story and song.
This annual event is shared among the downtown Jewish, Christian, and Islamic faith communities of Minneapolis, whose clergy gather throughout the year for shared learning, mutual support, and common mission. This is an opportunity to bring those communities together in recognition of the many ways we’re bound together in life, work, and witness. Don't miss one of the most moving and beautiful traditions of our downtown interfaith community!
This year’s event will be hosted by Saint Mark’s Episcopal Cathedral and our preacher will be Imam Makram El-Amin of Masjid An-Nur in North Minneapolis.
Doors open at 9:00 am! Experience the beauty of St. Mark’s historic worship space. Walk the Labyrinth in the Bishop Henry Whipple Chapel.
All are welcome--bring friends and family to this open and comfortable gathering.

Musings in the Moment
An Exhibition of Artworks by Anita White
“When difficulties arise… drawing is a way to find empathy and humor.” –Anita White
The Hennepin Avenue UMC Fine Arts Committee is excited to present the art of Anita White for our upcoming exhibit in Carlson Hall, on display October 24 through November 31. You will have two chances to meet the artist and ask questions about her work–details coming soon!
White graduated in 1974 with honors from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design, and lives in South Minneapolis near Minnehaha Falls. Her time living on an Irish island for three and half years created a deep sense of telling the story of places and people through drawing. These feelings shaped her travels to Mexico and Romania, which also inspired her art work. Early travels to Spain in 1969 and later in 1987 sparked a love of drawing flamenco which continues to the present day.
Drawing has also been a way for White to process and bear witness to life’s deeper moments. She drew her way through the care-taking of her parents and her brother’s mental health challenges. White created dozens of
pen and watercolor sketches in ambulances, hospital rooms, and in the emergency department waiting room.
She drew, she said, through “panic, anxiety and healing”–which included drawing
her late husband Josh’s medical issues. White calls this art “Narrative Medicine,” many examples of which are now on long-term display at Hennepin HealthCare. White explains:
“Drawing is a way to navigate daily life. A way to interact and honor others.
To find joy and beauty and the hidden humor that bubbles up in challenging moments.”

The Downtown Congregations to End Homelessness (DCEH) is now:
ALIGN MINNEAPOLIS
Align Minneapolis is committed to engage the community around us to address homelessness. Through learning, volunteer opportunities, community partnerships, community organizing, and development of effective strategies and programs.
We Align
- congregations across faith towards a common goal
- direct services with the needs of the community
- those who are housed with people who have lived experiences of homelessness
- state, city, and county laws and funding with our values
- our knowledge of homelessness with facts and experiences
How we take action
- INSPIRE - Call people to take action based on religious values
- EDUCATE - Strengthen awareness of the issues of homelessness and appropriate solutions
- ADVOCATE - Build the public will for policy change
- SERVE - Coordinate delivery of services among congregations
They are asking people to contact the Hennepin County Commissioners and demand minimum standards for the services and care shelters provide to people staying there. To learn more about this, go to

On the first and fifth Sunday afternoons of each month, feed our hungry neighbors at Community Meals.
On the second through fourth/fifth Sunday mornings of each month, help to host the best Sunday Brunch in town.
