As Principal of Bailey Middle School, I would like to welcome you to the start of another great year for our Broncos. Bailey has built a reputation over the past thirteen years of excellence in and out of the classroom. In each of the past six years, our students have exceeded academic performance and growth goals that consistency places us within the top 10% of all school in North Carolina. We have also been recognized as an "A" Rated School in North Carolina for the past four years, which is due to the hard work and dedication of our teachers, students, and parents.

As I begin my 8th year at Bailey, I feel very fortunate to have the opportunity to lead a school with such an outstanding tradition of academic, athletic, musical, and artistic success. However, success can look very different for each individual student so we continue to challenge our students and staff to embrace that "Greatness is a Choice" and something that must be earned. We are also excited about the continuation of our "Leader In Me" process with our students at Bailey again this year. Our mission to "Inspire Learners and Empower Leaders" aligns perfectly with the CMS Strategic Plan and will continue to be at the forefront of ultimately making Bailey the best middle school in North Carolina.

As we move through this year, the staff and I will ensure that our students function in a safe, challenging, yet fun environment, which creates motivated learners and leaders. In addition, we will continue to enhance instruction through technology utilizing our digital learning environment with Chromebooks and a variety of online platforms. I would also encourage our Broncos to get involved in the wide range of extracurricular activities that we offer, which are all exceptional and provide avenues for the varying interests of our students.

Our PTSA is a vital part of our school and works collaboratively to support the many programs we have at Bailey. There are many opportunities for parents and community members to share their time, talent, or treasure through a variety of ways in support of our kids. Furthermore, our Band, Orchestra, Performing Arts, and Athletic Booster Clubs provide great support for our students as well and are excellent ways to get involved. Students and staff at Bailey are lucky to be surrounded and embraced by parents, community members, businesses, and the Town of Cornelius who all provide a wide range of additional resources for our school. All of this really sets us apart from other communities around Charlotte and supports our student's success in so many areas. I encourage you to contact the school if you have questions or would like information about school tours. You can also email me directly at [email protected] to discuss the various ways you can actively support your child's education at Bailey.

Create a Great Day,

Welcome 6th Grade Families!

Welcome to Bailey 6 th grade families!  The transition to middle school can be challenging for many students as they face new routines, teachers, peers, and expectations.  Students will also experience a variety of social and emotional changes this year.  Middle school, in general, can be a bit of a roller coaster ride.  Sixth grade specifically can feel like a day riding the coasters at Carowinds.  Students may start the year off feeling intimidated.  They may have a difficult time adjusting to getting up every day after being a nighthawk all summer.  As the year progresses, their lockers and backpacks will look like a cyclone hit them.  They may have some frustration and fury with these changes.  Some students may even experience anxiety and after-burn at the end of the day. The middle school years can also be the perfect opportunity for students to develop habits that will help them to be highly effective in their academic careers.  Our job is to make sure that each of our Broncos has a safe and successful ride through the 6th grade vortex.

Here are a few suggestions to ensure that your Bronco has a smooth ride.
1.         Have a set and consistent routine
a.         The same time and place to do homework
b.         Check PowerSchool Thursday afternoons
c.         Bedtime before 11:00 pm WITHOUT technology in the room
2.         Continue to have conversations with your students
a.         Even if they are not talking or giving one word responses
b.         Use open ended questions-Instead of "how was your day?" try "what was one good thing that happened?"
3.         Encourage your students to use their agenda
a.         The majority of our families have teachers initial agendas at the end of each class
b.         If there is no homework the kids write "No Homework" and have the teacher initial
c.         That way you as parents know what is due and it teaches students accountability
d.         If there are not 5 signatures in the agenda-they loose privileges such as time on their phone, time out in the neighborhood
e.         After one or two times of not having their phones they will start writing down their assignments
4.         Do not wait to reach out for support if you are concerned about something
a.         If your students are concerned about a particular class or a particular peer then reach out
b.         Email the teachers for some background information
c.         Check with Counselors or Administrators
d.         Request a parent conference if it is needed.

We will be on this adventure with your Bronco for the next three years.  If you have any questions or we can help in any way, please feel free to reach out any time at  [email protected] and/or [email protected].

7th GRADE   BY: Bobbie Bigelow

Thanks in advance for the opportunity to lead the 7th grade team. 7th grade is a transitional time when kids are leaving their childhood behind and looking ahead to the next levels of their educational experience.  7 th grade is often times considered the most challenging year for this age group. Parents typically ask; "What advice can you offer a parent of a middle school student, particularly a 7 th grader?"  First of all, I highly encourage you to establish continuous communication with your child's teacher. By doing so, your child will see that you're on top of their academics and nothing will come as a surprise when it's time for the report card. Also, be a "nosey" parent by monitoring and limiting social media activities as well as listening to the types of conversations your child is engaging in on a regular basis. A few other suggestions are to watch for changes in your child's behavior, know your child's circle of friends, and be very aware of their interest or significant changes in moods or emotions. Most of all, encourage your 7 th grader to use their time wisely and do not procrastinate because the work will pile up and become overwhelming.

Mrs. Klemm-Cashion, 6th Grade Counselor, and I will continue working diligently to cultivate an environment for a successful and rewarding middle school experience. The 7th grade teachers are excited to meet you and ready to equip all students with the academic skills as well as strategies needed to handle social and emotional challenges that come along with the middle school experience.

I am looking forward to another amazing year at Bailey Middle School. If you have additional questions or concerns the best way to reach me is via email.

From Our 8th Grade Assistant Principal

8th GRADE      BY: Mrs. Fitzpatrick

Welcome to 8 th grade! We look forward to continuing our Middle School journey with those students who are returning and we welcome all of our new students.  Eighth grade will be led by Mrs. Fitzpatrick (Assistant Principal) and Ms. Stone (School Counselor). Ms. Stone has been a school counselor since 2013 and joined the Bailey family in 2016. She was also the 8th grade counselor last school year and is a former high school counselor.

So, what can you expect from 8 th grade? By now, you know what middle school is like, the ins, the outs, and the expectations, which can make school feel more comfortable. However, it is important to remember that students are continuing to find their own identity, create/maintain friendships, and figure out where they belong socially. It is normal for students to continue experiencing a wide variety of emotions. In addition, 8th graders are getting ready for a big transition- High School. This transition can sometimes feel intimidating as they go back to being the small fish in the big pond. The good news is that they have a whole year ahead of them to practice good habits that can get them ready for high school. Encourage your student to start practicing more independence in their day to day, especially if they have not started this yet. This can look like being responsible for packing their own lunch, setting their alarm for the morning and getting themselves up and ready, and taking responsibility for things they forget at home (along with accepting the consequences). Remember that middle school is a safe time and place for them to make mistakes and learn from them. While it can be difficult to see your student struggle and fall, keep in mind that it is better that they do it and learn from it now, when they have the support to try again and can learn from most experiences without the "real world consequences." Another way to prepare for high school is to practice self-advocacy. This can look like taking the initiative to ask their teachers for help, for missing work, attending working lunch, or emailing questions from home when absent. We understand that this is something new, as they are used to relying on parents to handle communication, but it is such an important skill to start developing as they prepare for the next step. Last, but not least, practice a one-semester mindset. Once in high school, their semester grade will be their final grade and it will be on their transcript, which will be looked at for college and scholarship applications. For those taking HS level classes (Spanish I, Math I, or Math II), remember that their final grades this year will be on their HS transcript.
We are looking forward to working together to make this a successful year. If you have any questions or we can help in any way, please feel to reach out any time at   [email protected]  and/or  [email protected] .

Bailey Band Notes

We are very excited for the new school year! We had a wonderful past school year with the Performing Band and Jazz Band earning straight ratings of "Superior" at MPA (Music Performance Adjudication). The Performing Band traveled to New Orleans for Festivals of Music. The band earned another "Superior" and 1 st Place. The Performing Band has been selected to perform at the NC Music Educators Association Professional Development Conference on November 11 th. This is the highest honor for a middle school band in our state!!! Over 13 years, the bands have earned 28 ratings of "Superior." We had 2 students audition for and make the Western Region Jazz Band A. Four of our band students made the All-District Honors Bands.

The officers for the Bailey Band Boosters include Laura Ziegler - President, Kristy Haney - Vice-President, Melissa Turney -Treasurer, Open - Secretary, and Lafrieeda Busby - Member-At-Large. We welcome the support and help of all band parents. If you are interested in joining the Bailey Band Booster Board, please contact Laura Ziegler or Ms. Petersen .

It is not too late for rising 6 th graders to join the band but we need to act quickly. Please contact Ms. Petersen if you are interested. Sixth grade is the only opportunity to join the band without having any experience. Bailey and Hough Bands work closely together and your child can be an important member of our band family.

Any band student with at least one year of playing experience is invited to join Performing Band and/or Jazz Band. The membership forms are on the band web site. Students must maintain at least a "B" in band class, have good behavior, and attend as well as be on time for morning rehearsals. Performing Band will also be going to MPA in March and Nashville, Tennessee, in April. Jazz Band will be attending a jazz festival and MPA.

The band program collects BOXTOPS FOR EDUCATION and USED INK CARTRIDGES. We turn these in to the respective programs to raise funds for the Bailey Band. Your child does not have to be in band for you to help. Please drop them off in the office for Ms. Petersen.
Please link your Harris Teeter VIC card to #6111.

Bailey Dance Company (BDC) Auditions

BDC is a club that consists of dancers who have strong understanding of dance technique, performance skills, and passion to share the benefits of dance with our community. Students should show competency in learning choreography quickly, and require minimal technique correction. Dancers should ideally dance at an intermediate level, and new members will require a dance teacher/coach reference. Students participate annually in a variety of school performances, and participate in our "Chance to Dance" movement program with the Huntersville Elementary SAC program students.

Auditions will take place Thursday 9/5 AND Friday 9/6 from 8am-9:10am. Students must attend both days & complete the online Google Form that will be provided on the dance homepage: (  www.broncosdance.weebly.com) Please email Deanna Riley with any questions: [email protected]
