August Newsletter
Dear Allegro Community,
We had a great first day of school and we are greatly looking forward to the year ahead! Below you will find some pertinent information regarding policies and procedures, and upcoming event for the 2019-2020 school year.

Parents, it is extremely important that you pick up your child at the proper time. Students have been assigned either a 2:30 or a 3:30 dismissal. Please clarify with your child if they are a 2:30 or 3:30 dismissal by checking their schedule. I encourage you to call the school if there is confusion. Please email your school counselor if you need to change the time your child is dismissed. If we are not able to fit all cars in the parking lot at once, you must circle the block instead of blocking Broad St.

School Pictures will be taken on Tuesday, September 24th by Tumbleston's Photography. Please note order forms must be turned in on picture day to the photographer. Allegro staff is unable to collect these forms. If you would rather order online, you can click  HERE to access their online portal. You will find more information below on photos and please be sure to read the order form carefully. Picture Make-Up Day will be on October 29th.

As a reminder, September 20th is an early dismissal day for Allegro. Students should be picked up at 11:15 AM. Please make arrangements accordingly.

Progress Reports will be distributed to students during the week of September 23rd.

If you haven't already done so, please be sure to pay your technology insurance online. As a reminder, Middle School students will receive iPads and High School students will receive MacBooks.

Students have been given an Acceptable Use of Technology form to review. Please ensure you review this with your student, sign off on the form, and return it to the main office. They will be given their device once the main office receives the signed form and payment for the insurance. Allegro Charter School of Music is a 1:1 school, and the use of technology is considered the equivalent of a textbook at a non 1:1 school. It is the student's responsibility to bring their device to school every day, fully charged and ready for use in each class, and ensure its well-being.

Sincerely,

Daniel Neikirk
Principal

Attendance
Dear Parent/Guardian:

Our goal this year is to ensure that every student attends school regularly.

Showing up for school has a huge impact on a student’s academic success starting in kindergarten and continuing through high school. Even as children grow older and more independent, families play a key role in making sure students get to school safely every day and understand why attendance is so important for success in school and in life.

We realize some absences are unavoidable due to health problems or other circumstances. But, we also know that when students miss too much school — regardless of the reason — it can cause them to fall behind academically. Your child is less likely to succeed if he or she is chronically absent — which means missing 18 or more days over the course of an entire school year. Research shows:

  • Children chronically absent in kindergarten and 1st grade are much less likely to read at grade level by the end of 3rd grade.
  • By 6th grade, chronic absence is a proven early warning sign for students at risk for dropping out of school.
  • By 9th grade, good attendance can predict graduation rates even better than 8th grade test scores.

Absences can add up quickly. A child is chronically absent if he or she misses just two days every month! Clearly, going to school regularly matters!

We don’t want your child to fall behind in school and get discouraged. Please ensure that your child attends school every day and arrives on time. Here are a few practical tips to help support regular attendance:

  • Make sure your children keep a regular bedtime, are getting enough sleep, and establish a morning routine.
  • Lay out clothes and pack backpacks the night before.
  • Ensure your children go to school every day unless they are truly sick.
  • Avoid scheduling vacations or doctor’s appointments when school is in session.
  • Talk to teachers and counselors for advice if your children feel anxious about going to school.
  • Develop back-up plans for getting to school if something comes up. Call on a family member, neighbor, or another parent to take your child to school.

Let us know how we can best support you and your children so that they can show up for school on time every day. We want your child to be successful in school! If you have any questions or need more information please contact me, a member of administration, your child’s guidance counselor, or one of your child’s teachers.

Sincerely,
Laura L. Blackmore
Associate Principal
