We can identify death in every direction. We see war, hunger, addiction, poverty, a dying planet, pandemic deaths rising and broken hearts. This is not a new story. The children of Israel surely saw death in every direction, wandering in the desert and at least occasionally wondering about their next meal. Paul looks at his own life and, at first, sees nothing beyond spiritual death. He reminds us that death is not just physical, but also spiritual. Then, in the parable of the sower, three-fourths of the seeds die and three-fourths of the sections of the field are inhospitable to flourishing life. Sometimes, life isn't even given a chance. We might look at the world and ourselves and only see the places that are absent and inhospitable to God's love.
Sunday's texts all go a step further, however, to articulate or reveal God bringing forth life where there is only death and God's absence in every direction. First, God renews the covenant with the children of Israel. After their own failures and disobedience, God restores a relationship with the children of Israel and gives them "the best of all the land in Egypt" (Gen. 45:20) and "provisions for the journey" (Gen. 45:21). Paul reflects on God growing new branches where old tree branches had fallen away (I see these fallen tree branches as the many things we usually do during summers in Wolfeboro: in person worship, the summer fair, Fourth of July activities, etc.).
The Gospel parable of the sower elicits reflection, repentance, and, ultimately, new life from its readers and hearers in considering the sort of spiritual life they practice. Are we hospitable or inhospitable to God's word? How are you responding to God's word during the pandemic? I suspect as the allegory suggests about the Matthean community, we have varying levels of commitment as we cope with the death of so much during this extraordinary time. The good news is that this parable is a vivid reminder of all God has overcome-rocks, scorching sun, thorns, and snatching-to bring life to the world. God brings forth life in places where we can see only death! [Sundays and Seasons, 2020]

Women's Worship
|
One of the few benefits to come out of this pandemic, for me, is the opportunity to participate in Women's Worship on Tuesday mornings. Women"s Worship scheduled for 9:00 am is via Zoom, which allows anyone to participate who may not otherwise do so including former parishioners who have moved away. So nice to see Jane, Michele and Lynne again.
The following readings are from the last two worship Zooms.
Oscar Romero
in The Scandal of Redemption (DD 7/4)
I ask all of you, dear brothers and sisters, to view these things that are happening in our historical moment with a spirit of hope, generosity, and sacrifice. And let us do what we can. We can all do something and be more understanding. If we illuminate with Christian hope our intense longings for justice and peace and all that is good, then we can be sure that no one dies forever. If we have imbued our work with a sense of great faith, love of God, and hope for humanity, then all our endeavors will lead to the splendid crown that is the sure reward for the work of sowing truth, justice, love, and goodness on earth. Our work does not remain here; it is gathered and purified by the Spirit of God and returned to us as a reward.
Give us this day our daily gratitude - Nadia Bolz-Weber (changing I to We)
I swear to God, exercise and gratitude are like, God's own anti-depressants. In this time of loss and suffering and turmoil, when not one of us is spared of sorrow, this morning I made myself list some things I am genuinely grateful for right now, today, in this very moment. And it made me feel better. Feel free to add your own. Also, this is obviously not a comprehensive list of that which is worthy to be grateful for, but simply what came to mind in the moment.
That we have been given one more day, we give thanks.
That the birds still sing each morning, impossibly early outside our window, we give thanks.
For the sun rising once again in the East, we give thanks.
For this day we have bread, we give thanks...
For one more day of mobility, we give thanks.
For novelists who create worlds and characters and stories for our minds and not for our TVs,
we give thanks.
For cell phone reception, and I-guess-it's-better-than-nothing ZOOM calls and reliable internet
service, we give thanks.
That we are loved, we give thanks.
That we are forgiven, we give thanks.
That we are alive, we give thanks.
That you, O God, are known by many names, we give thanks.
That you, O God, are present when we feel only your absence, we give thanks.
That you are God and we are not, we give the most thanks. Forgive us when we forget that one.
And for every other gift we are too self-obsessed to see, but that totally comes from you. Thank you.
Thank you. Thank you. Amen.
Blessings -
Carolyn

All Sainters in the News

In today's Granite State News:
Photo on page 8 (Opinion) - Residents of Port Wedeln Road had their own golf cart parade for the 4th of July. The 30 decorated carts were led by our very clown
Sarah Day.
Also on that page, weekly contributor
Dan Lake, focused on American Community in his Cabin Chronicles column.
A great article about how working together with shared goals benefits the community as a whole. I highly recommend it.
(A dear friend several years ago gave me a small book titled, "Community - The Other Side of Self". A collection of quotes on community by many different voices, some of which you may recognize. I look at it quite often and sometimes post one that strikes me at the time on Facebook. Here is one by Martin Luther King, Jr.
"He who works against community is working against the whole of creation. Therefore, if I respond to hate with a reciprocal hate I do nothing but intensify the cleavage in broken community. I can only close the gap in broken community by meeting hate with love.")

Connect With God & With Others
|
"...have you ever found God in church? I never did. I just found a bunch of folks hoping for him to show. Any God I ever felt in church I brought in with me. And I think all the other folks did too. They come to church to share God, not find God." -Alice Walker
The church is where God's people-YOU-are. While we are in exile in our homes, we don't need to go to church to find God, because when we are church together on-line we share God. There are many ways to connect, to see, hear and share God online at All Saints'...

Not sure how to connect via Zoom?
During this time of disconnect due to Covid-19, All Saints' is utilizing Zoom for many gatherings.
From Sunday Virtual Coffee Hour, to Bible Studies, Zoom will allow our congregation to connect live and face-to-face, while following the social guidelines set in place by our government. Here are the steps for participating via computer or telephone:
- You will find a link to the event and an I.D. number and password. (Note: The FIRST time you open a Zoom link, it will prompt you to download the app. This is FREE. Please follow the instructions given to install.)
- Each Zoom event that you open will ask for the I.D. number and password.
- For any video/visual participation, you will need a camera either on your phone, or on your computer. If you do not have one, the invitation email you receive will provide instructions for calling in on your phone.
- We encourage participants to mute yourself unless you have an opportunity to speak. Household noises can often times be a distraction to others. If you would like to get your Zoom account set up ahead of time, visit https://zoom.us/.
Troubleshooting:
- If you log in and no one else is in the gathering, double check to make sure you have the right date and time; if you do, it's likely that you've clicked/entered the wrong link/address. Each meeting has its own link/address and only works for that gathering. Note: some gatherings use a "wait room" and the host will let you in.
- If you get connected but can't seem to connect audio, try using "chat" (link at the bottom of the screen) to ask for help.
- If you can only see one person, try clicking on the "speaker view" button on the top and switch it to "gallery view" to see all participants.
- If your internet connection fails and you get knocked off, simply join back in. It happens.
- If you're stuck, contact the event host/leader.

Thank You for Giving During This Time of Pandemic
|
Thank you for all who have continued to support the work of All Saints during this time. You may make contributions by mail, using your financial institution's automated check writing service, or secure online giving via Donate
Creator of all we enjoy, we give you thanks for the countless people you have gathered to do your work as All Saints' Wolfeboro. We thank you for your Holy Spirit inspiring some as they longed for this church, others as they built this church and still others as they lovingly and boldly led this church through times of abundance and times of scarcity. Help us to be bold as we model giving of time and money during this time. Make our generous giving a symbol of both our faith and our gratitude. We pray in the name of your son, Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior. Amen.
