Le Journal: Back to school Edition

From the Head of School

A Great Beginning

Dear AL community,

Our first week of school went very well. We have been working with the children to promote our school values of diversity, excellence, character and accountability.  We believe that a safe and nurturing school culture is the bedrock for academic success. We urge you to review the student handbook with your children and closely work with our team to better support your child.

I would like to remind you that if you have any concerns about your child, our procedure is to first contact the teacher then the principal. You can contact your child's teaching team here.

The strength of our school community is built on a tight partnership with our engaged families. We need and value your help in coaching after school programs, helping with reading intervention, joining the PTO and attending PTO meeting (the first one is this Saturday, see details below), volunteering for homeroom parent, participating in school committees, attending school events, and generously donating to our annual fund drive.

We are very excited to start a new school year and look forward to continuing to work with you.

From the Cherry Principal

Welcome Back

Welcome back to the 2019-20 school year.  I am always happy to see our returning students and to meet our new kindergarten students and their families.  Obviously, I must need to do a better job of introducing myself to our youngest kids.  Today I was making my rounds and saying good morning to the kids. As I was leaving the room, a kindergartener said to his teacher, "Why is that lady always coming into our class?"

One way for our parents to get to know me and the rest of our team is to come to Student Success Night next week.  Each campus has its own night- so check your calendars and look for more detailed information via email.  Student Success Night is a great opportunity to hear more about the school as a whole and also what your child will be learning this year in her/his classroom.

Thank you always for your support of our school!

Board Communication:
High School ProjectBoardComm

Over the last 2 months, the Académie Lafayette school board and administration has been engaged in detailed discussions regarding the feasibility of opening a high school.  It is important to know that no final decision has been made, but within the next 30 days, the board anticipates making a decision on an opening date for the high school. The two options currently being discussed are opening the high school in either Fall of 2020 or Fall of 2021.

We understand the potential new high school program will raise many questions for our parents so we want to be sure everyone is well-informed throughout the process.  Once a decision has been made, a parent meeting will be hosted to answer all questions parents may have.

Thank you for your strong support of our school.

What is your AL story? Has attending AL made a difference in your child's life? In YOUR life? Did your family make a special effort to attend AL (such as move to the KCPS district so that you could apply?) Has it given your child the language skills to help someone in need? Does attending a free public school (i.e. not paying tuition) give your family the extra financial cushion to do something that you feel is important -- like start a not for profit? Has the foundation laid at AL given your older child an edge in high school or beyond? (Like Tom DeZutter who scored a perfect 36 on the English ACT.) Please share your AL story with us! Send them to Robyn King at [email protected]. Put STORIES in the subject line. Thank you!
