PASTOR'S MESSAGE
REV. RICHARD E. MALMBERG
Friends:
I first heard about Theology on Tap while serving a church in New England. We had seminary students working with us, learning about parish ministry and fulfilling their field education requirement. Some would attend regular gatherings at one of the local pubs to discuss theological topics in a less staid and informal setting than seminary or church building. When I was a seminarian some of us would naturally gravitate to the local pub to discuss
|
|
theology after we had turned in our most recent systematic theology paper. Seems like a natural fit. Turns out, the concept of Theology on Tap is older than that. It did not originate on the East Coast. According to Wikipedia, Theology on Tap was born in Arlington Heights, Illinois in 1981 at Saint Patrick’s Parish. It grew out of conversations between a priest and a recent college graduate.
Theology on Tap
found its way to Wayne during Rev. Dr. David Russell’s interim ministry at Little Home Church. While we do not have a pub on every corner of Wayne, Dunham Woods Riding Club generously provides an honorary membership to the pastor of Little Home Church by the Wayside. Theology on Tap was popular while David was here, and I think it would be well-worth reviving. I propose gathering once-a-month at The Club, and suggest we begin this month on
November 10
, and continue meeting at
11 am every second Sunday of the month
.
I will reserve space on my membership, based on reservations made to the church office by noon the preceding Thursday. Food and beverages will be paid by Dutch treat. Simply pay me by cash or check at the end of the session. We will plan on ending by 12:30 pm. This is a great way to expand the reach of Little Home Church, share fellowship and have some lively conversation. I hope to see you there.

STEWARDSHIP SEASON
I AM THE WAY
We can assume that, at some point, Jesus worked for a living. We guess he was a carpenter, like Joseph. In first century Nazareth, that meant he was more of a day laborer than a skilled tradesman. His family did not own land. There is no evidence in scripture that Jesus ever paid bills or met a payroll. When he commissioned his disciples to spread the good news, heal the sick and cast out demons, he told them not to take a purse, a staff, or extra clothing.
|
|
And yet, here we are. Little Home Church is organized around the teachings and example of Jesus. However, we do have a payroll to meet. We do own land. And, I dare say, we do find ourselves anxious about the future from time to time. Does that mean we have rejected our Savior’s teachings? No. It means that we have, as Christians have throughout the ages, kept faith with Jesus by grounding a sacred community with an actual address, in a larger community.
Little Home Church gives us the opportunity to bear witness that communities and institutions can indeed operate and thrive by taking our guidance from the teachings of Jesus. This is where we can nurture our spirits, teach our children lessons of our faith, and serve God in our community and beyond. In good times and uncertain ones, we find spiritual grounding and discern our moral path in the loving fellowship of this Christian community.
Little Home Church is our shared household of faith. Like many households, we are concerned about our finances. Expenses do not go away. Heat, salary, telecommunications, and more are realities of running a church. Our dedicated staff and lay leadership has a phenomenal record of thrift and efficiency with the resources entrusted to us. These have been multiplied like loaves and fishes and put to work.
I hope and pray that as you consider your annual pledge, you will recognize that all of our efforts and contributions matter. The contribution of our church in a troubled and beautiful world is an important. I hope that when you receive your pledge letter, you will give proportionally from the gifts God has entrusted to you. Watch your mail for your pledge card.
We will dedicate our pledges in worship on Sunday, Nov. 24.

OUTREACH MINISTRY
RENZ ADDICTION CENTER
As the days get shorter and the nights get longer, we are reminded that, sadly, not every season can be as bright as the long summer days. Similarly, some seasons of life can be as dark as the impending winter. Earlier in October, we listened to Deb Howe from Renz Addiction Center (RAC) during the Mission Moment. RAC is that bright light guiding the way for thousands as they struggle through their own personal seasons of addiction. Deb spoke of hope when she listed new approvals of treatment options that RAC is now able to offer due to our support. However, our church is able to assist in non-financial ways as well. In order to continue leading the way for those who are struggling, Renz is currently looking for volunteers to do small things that make a big difference, including stuffing envelopes and sending out mailings, hanging promotional flyers, assisting with Red Ribbon Week take down in the community, and even chaperoning dances for kids to assure that they have a safe place to have fun.
If you are interested in assisting RAC in their larger mission, please email me and I can put you in touch personally with Deb to get details. If dinner and comedy is more your style, RAC is hosting a “Fest and Folly” evening at St. Charles Country Club in November. Tickets can be found by
clicking here
. Please consider giving this amazing organization a tiny fraction of your time: it makes a giant difference!
Outreach Ministry is also once again partnering with Neighborhood Food Pantries in providing Thanksgiving dinners to those less fortunate. LHC has committed to providing 45 dinners. See me after church one Sunday to get a number and a shopping list. The items for the dinner are
due Saturday, Nov. 23 at Resurrection Catholic Church
just down the road (Army Trail Road & Rt. 59). You may drop your dinners off between 7:30 - 9 am. You don't even have to get out of your car!

FRIDAY NIGHT AT THE MOVIES
NOVEMBER 8 , 7 PM
|
Five Feet Apart
Seventeen-year-old Stella spends most of her time in the hospital as a cystic fibrosis patient. Her life is full of routines, boundaries and self-control -- all of which get put to the test when she meets Will, an impossibly charming teen who has the same illness. There's an instant flirtation, though restrictions dictate that they must maintain a safe distance between them. As their connection intensifies, so does the temptation to throw the rules out the window and embrace that attraction.
Join us in the pastor's office...we'll bring the popcorn.
The group meets at 6 pm for dinner at Portillos, Rt. 64, St. Charles. We invite you to join us.

3RD THURSDAY OF THE MONTH, 7 PM

NEXT MEETING - November 21
One Thousand White Women, by Jim Fergus
One Thousand White Women
is the story of May Dodd and a colorful assembly of pioneer women who, under the auspices of the U.S. government, travel to the western prairies in 1875 to intermarry among the Cheyenne Indians. The covert and controversial "Brides for Indians" program, launched by the administration of Ulysses S. Grant, is intended to help assimilate the Indians into the white man's world. Toward that end May and her friends embark upon the adventure of their lifetime. Jim Fergus has so vividly depicted the American West that it is as if these diaries are a capsule in time.

CHRISTMAS PAGEANT
SUNDAY, DECEMBER 15, 5 PM
As we head into our busy holiday season, it is time to start thinking of the annual Christmas Pageant. The Christmas pageant has been a long-standing Little Home Church tradition. It’s the simple telling of the Christmas Story with children ages preschool through high school.
Rehearsals are Dec. 1, 8 and 15
from 9:30 to 10:30 am with a slightly extended rehearsal after church on Sunday, Dec. 15.
Over the last few years, recruitment of kids to participate has been difficult.
|
|
|
We would love for as many children and grandchildren to help fill the roles of cherubs, heavenly hosts, shepherds, wise-men, kings, pages, even Baby Jesus. Please consider asking your family, friends, and neighbors. The earlier we fill the cast, the more prepared we are! Please pass on any names and contact information to either myself or the Church Office.
You may be asking how can you help?
We are looking for volunteers to help set up the stage, help dress the cast the evening of the pageant, escort the kids into the church at the proper time, and for those interested in sewing and washing costumes leading up to the pageant.
A special thanks to those who have already signed up to help. I look forward to working with all and getting into the holiday spirit!

LHC HELPS TOYS FOR TOTS
TOYS DUE: DECEMBER 15
What is it?
Toys for Tots
is a program run by the
United States Marine Corps Reserve
which distributes
toys
to children whose parents cannot afford to buy them gifts for
Christmas
. The program was founded in 1947 by reservist
Major
Bill Hendricks. The mission of the program "is to collect new, unwrapped toys during October, November and December each year, and distribute those toys as Christmas gifts to needy children in the community in which the campaign is conducted." Through the years Toys for Tots has distributed over 512 million toys!
What do we need?
We need toys for children ages infant through preteen/teen. Toys for Tots does not supply a desired toy list but instead asks you to consider what you might find an appropriate gift for your child, niece, nephew or grandchild. Check the ads in your local paper and head on over to the toy aisle in your favorite store! If you're unable to shop please consider a monetary donation. Toys for Tots then uses the funds to purchase supplemental toys for the age groups that fall short on toys. Last year we donated over 100 toys. Let's match that number and surpass it! The drop-off boxes are already in the Parish Hall.
All donations are due at Little Home Church UNWRAPPED by Sunday, December 15.

SMILE WHEN YOU SHOP!
AMAZON SMILE PROGRAM - DONATIONS TO LHC

.
AmazonSmile is a simple and automatic way for you to support the church when you shop on Amazon, at no cost to you. You use the same account on Amazon.com and AmazonSmile. Your shopping cart, Wish List, wedding or baby registry, and other account settings are also the same.
100% of the donation amount generated from your eligible purchase on AmazonSmile will be donated. Amazon pays all expenses of the AmazonSmile Foundation; they are not deducted from the donation amounts generated by your purchases on AmazonSmile.
Here’s how to participate:
Search
smile.amazon.com
. (You must go to Amazon this way to generate donations.) Once the site comes up, sign in to your Amazon account. Then scroll down to the box that says, “Select charitable organization to support/Pick your own charity to support” (or words to that effect). Type Little Home Church by the Wayside, UCC into the box and click on the select button. The church name will appear.

THE QUEEN CONTINUES HER REIGN
LHC FUNDRAISING RAFFLE
The Queen of Hearts continues to gather momentum each week. We received great news this month for the LHC: Wayne resident, Megan Kowalski, our Queen of Hearts winner in August decided to donate her winnings back to the church. We are grateful and appreciative for her generosity. Our earnings have generated over $1500! We continue to hold the
raffle every Wednesday, at 8 pm
at the Spotted Fox, 3615 East Main Street, St. Charles, (across from Von Maur and Coopers Hawk). Each week church members come for fellowship, libations, and dinner to witness the drawing. If you have a free Wednesday evening, please come and join in the fun. We were excited to see our Queen of Hearts Fundraiser appear in the Daily Herald on Thursday, October 24, and a photo of our winner.
Should you desire to purchase tickets, and support our Outreach Program, you are able to purchase tickets throughout the week at the Spotted Fox or during fellowship after worship. Or if more convenient, please call Carol Berger at 630.363.8982 or Mary Roach, 630.544.1881, and we would be happy to accommodate you.

'JOYFUL JOYFUL' UPDATE
STILL JOYFUL!
We are into our second year of the Joyful, Joyful, We Restore Thee capital campaign. We made great progress in the past year, raising nearly $1.5M from almost 70 members and friends. Throughout the year we shared ideas and plans with the congregation and community and we have made adjustments and changes along the way. The large display in the Parish Hall will give you a wonderful overview. Now it is time to start work on the project!
Phase One
will involve the
passageway on the west side of the sanctuary, the kitchen and bathrooms, the electrical system, and the septic system.
Architect Lisa Sharp is developing construction drawings so that we may obtain a permit from the Village of Wayne and gather bids for the work. We hope to break ground in early 2020. In the meantime, LHC Financial Secretary Ann McLaughlin is reviewing our pledge commitments and payments to determine the progress on the campaign to date. This data will be helpful to each of us who have pledged and crucial for future construction loans. We hope it will also encourage others to participate. Watch for a progress report in the next few weeks.
Our committee meets monthly. In addition to fundraising, construction plans, and grant applications, we are currently working on developing an online, crowdfunding message through the
GoFundMe
platform. Stay tuned. Thank you to everyone for your support of this massive campaign. If you have any questions, or would like to make a pledge, please contact me or any member of the campaign team. Thank you,
Joyful Team:
Anne Bouchard, Chip Braulick, Greg Hege, Bob and Kathleen Kaska, Susannah Lesswing, Andrea Redmond, Susi Winquist, and Pastor Richard Malmberg
