Summer Worship Service
with Blessing of Students and Teachers
11th Sunday after Pentecost
10:00 a.m.
August 25, 2019
Ministers: Rev. Lori Pistor, Rev. Dr. Duane Hix
Sermon: A Prophet to the Nations, Duane Hix
Director of Music: Ed Yasick
Soloist: Diane Garber
Scripture Reading: Psalm 71-1-6; Jeremiah 1:1-10
Dr. Duane Hix retired last year after 37 years as a pastor in the PC (USA).
He served churches in New York, Delaware, Iowa (his home state) and Johnston County, NC before serving as an interim for 3-4 years prior to retirement.
You just might know Duane's wife, Medora, his daughter Emmie Brown,
and the two whirling dervishes that are his granddaughters. In his retirement,
he is specializing in grandparent duties, is growing increasingly frustrated
with the bugs and pests in the garden and spends about half his time in his study writing a book on the relationship of modernity and postmodernism to Protestant theology and practice.

Mission News:
Guatemala needs you!
The "land of many trees" and mountains is calling you for the next mission trip to Guatemala, Oct. 15 - 22. Many wonderful things happened on the recent trip, and you can be part of the important follow-up!
We particularly need people to:
- help demonstrate computers, including document creation and management, internet use (searching, emails, major sites), etc. The new computer café is open but people need help learning the ropes.
- help the ladies learn to sew. We purchased one electric and one pedal sewing machine. Two of the young women will help them get started but we also need dedicated help to demonstrate techniques, basic threading and bobbin work, cutting help, etc.
- work with the set-up of the simple-process library, and perhaps with very basic literacy skills.
- assist with the massive water project, whether by research, investigation, site viewing, etc.
Of course, we always need people to engage the children with games and activities (such as bead bracelets, art, etc), someone to take good notes, and to generally be friendly and open.
Please see Medora Hix, medora.hix@carypresbyterian.org to find out more. We would love to have up to 4 more to go, and we need to purchase tickets SOON so please don't delay!

Presbyterian Men Survey
(If you haven't taken the survey linked below, please do so!)
CPC Presbyterian Men!
I'm so glad I was able to share breakfast with many of you a few weeks ago.
Our conversation was fruitful and highlighted an interest in exploring opportunities; some familiar like an early weekday coffee, some new, like an App that would allow PM to connect to each other for support, prayer, or advice.
Many thought a survey could be helpful so here you have it! (
Click link here.)
Short and painless, I promise, and feel free to email me directly should there be other things you wish to convey. Better yet, give me a call!
Thank you!

Be The Hands is
coming November 2:
Help Needed!
We are less than 3 months away from another incredible
Be the Hands
day
at CPC. As this intergenerational local mission continues to grow and excite the congregation, we have a need for additional help with organizational tasks prior to the event.
Areas needing help include promotion, securing leaders for various missions
of the day, plus help with active preparation during the 4 to 5 days immediately before Be The Hands.
Historically Be The Hands has been owned by the Deacons. The Deacons have reorganized and each Deacon is now responsible for a group of people at CPC, rather than activities. Due to this, the Session agreed that Be The Hands day should be part of the Mission Ministry area, causing the need for help as we transition.
To provide a hand in activities leading up to Be The Hands day, please contact Scott Peoples by email at r.scott.peoples@gmail.com, or call (919) 987-6800. Thank you in advance from the Mission Team!

The Cool Books Club will meet on September 3 at 7:00 p.m. in Peg Giesbrecht's home. Our book of the month is Holy Envy: Finding God in the Faith of Others by Barbara Brown Taylor.
After visiting mosques, monasteries and temples with her students, Taylor finds herself both inspired and troubled by what she learns. However, she returns to her own tradition for guidance, finding new meaning in old teachings that have too often been used to exclude religious strangers rather than embracing the divine challenges they present.
If you are interested in this topic, please join us. For more information, call Peg Giesbrecht at 919-859-3951 or Ellen Cline at 919-469-1456.

Thursday, Aug. 22, 7:00 p.m.
2220 High House Rd., Cary
Dr. Tharwat Wahba, professor of missions, evangelism and church planting at the Theological Seminary of Cairo will speak at 7:00 PM on August 22 at Cornerstone Presbyterian Church. 2220 High House Road Cary, NC 27519
Dr. Wahba is an ordained Presbyterian pastor and works with the Synod of the Nile to help new church developments. Since the Arab Spring, many changes have taken place in Egypt. One of the biggest changes that has taken place is that the church has been granted much greater access from the Egyptian government to start new churches. Previously, they could make application and wait for years to receive a permit, or might never receive one. However, today, that has changed.
With the opportunity to plant new churches, the presbytery needs more pastors and the seminary is looking to train more. Also, Egypt sends more missionaries into other Middle Eastern countries than any other nation. Please join us to hear what God is doing and how we can help the church in the Middle East grow.
