President's Message

Dear Members,

Were you able to join us at the Lean Six Sigma and Data Science (LSSDS) conference? This was our first year as the sponsoring division, and you may have noticed the name change from Engineering & Lean Six Sigma (ELSS) to LSSDS to reflect the constant evolution of the field of industrial engineering. A lot of us are now integrating Data Science into our Operation Excellence strategy. We enjoyed great presentations on a broad spectrum of topics from Lean manufacturing to Advanced Data Science applications, and three amazing keynote speakers who all inspired us to keep learning and developing ourselves. More than anything, it was the first IISE in person conference since the covid-19 pandemic and we enjoyed the things that we had missed: a very lively panel discussion, a division Town Hall with our famous quiz contest, as well as networking opportunities during breaks and dinners. Our volunteer committee members have been kept busy all Spring and Summer with abstract and paper reviews. Speaking of papers, we had a record submission this year with 23 original papers submitted! It was very hard for the reviewers to select the top three, who were awarded their prizes at the conference closing ceremony. The 2022 LSSDS conference will be back in Atlanta in the fall, and it will surely be a conference you don’t want to miss!

Before that though, our eyes are now on another important conference: the IISE Annual conference in Seattle May 21-24th. The Op Ex Division is leading the Lean Six Sigma track and we can guarantee that amazing presentations will be on the agenda! At the Town Hall meeting the Best Student Paper Award, Best Teaching Award, and Best Practice Award will be presented, and we will of course take time to have some fun and network! More information on the Op Ex Division awards can be found on our web page: https://www.iise.org/details.aspx?id=835 don’t hesitate to contact us if you know someone who should be nominated!

Conferences are not the only ways to hear great speakers, the division hosted a great webinar on “Lean Manufacturing Laboratory for Hands on Learning in Industrial Engineering”. If you missed it, you can access the recording on our archive page: https://www.iise.org/Details.aspx?id=23050

Before we meet again, may the earlier setting of the sun remind us to take time to rest.

Sincerely,

Johanna Ficatier
