November 2019
Dear Marist Families,
Today marks the last day of the first marking period. We hope that your son/daughter has had a successful start to the school year. As we transition to the 2nd quarter, there a few items to be aware of:
- On Monday, November 4, students are expected to be in full uniform. No more polos until 4th quarter. If your son/daughter needs a uniform item, don't hesitate to contact Mr. Power at [email protected] who has a closet full of clean, gently used articles.
- In order to prepare for final averaging and submission of grades, the Plus Portal grading module was deactivated this past Wednesday. All other modules, such as calendar, e-locker, and homework remain available.
- The grading module will be reactivated after the distribution of report cards on Thursday, November 7, when Parent-Teacher Conferences will be held from 5:00-8:00. This is an opportunity to have a one-on-one chat with your son's/daughter's teachers. It is very important to build these valuable relationships. Plan to be there.
- Note that families with overdue balances will not receive their son's/daughter's report cards on November 7 so they will miss the opportunity for parent-teacher conferences. This is a good time to get caught up! Stay in touch with Ms. Vargas at ext. 200 or [email protected] if you have questions about that.

A word about School Safety and Security . . . Mr. Romano, Dean of Students, oversees this facet of school life. This includes building security but also the wellness and safety of individual students. If you ever have a concern, don't hesitate to reach out to him. Students cannot learn if they don't feel safe.
On a related item, Mr. Romano and I have had many discussions about the latest phenomenon known as vaping or "juuling". As always, teens are on the forefront of the latest fads. Our research tells us that this addictive practice is even more dangerous in the near term than smoking regular cigarettes. It is the vapor's condensation in the lungs which has contributed to multiple deaths around the country. It doesn't matter what product is being vaped, vaping itself is dangerous. Please discuss this with your sons and daughters. Vaping and possession of vaping products will be treated as a controlled substance. See 8.8 in the Parent/Student Handbook. Vaping is not just against school rules; it is hazardous to your health.
We'll be celebrating Thanksgiving at Marist with a food drive which will culminate in a prayer service on Tuesday, November 26. On behalf of the entire administration, faculty, and staff, we wish you and yours a blessed Thanksgiving.

Academic News

Report Cards:
Report cards will be distributed on Thursday, November 7th at the Parent/Teacher Conference. Parent/Teacher Conferences are from 5:00pm to 8:00pm. If your child is struggling, you may sit with each teacher and devise a plan for improvement. Remember that communication between home and school is essential for student success. Please note: Report cards will not be distributed to a student; a parent or guardian must be present to receive a report card. If you cannot make it on Thursday, the report card will be mailed on Friday. Also, if any student has an outstanding tuition balance, his/her report card will not be available that evening.
Study Hall:
Students who have failed two or more subjects on the first report card must attend a mandatory Study Hall from 2:45pm-3:45pm Monday through Thursday, beginning on Wednesday, November 13th . Students will be able to read, complete homework, review for tests and get extra help. We encourage parents to have the students pay the Study Hall fee of $25.00 out of their own pocket. If the fee is not paid during the first two weeks of Study Hall, it will increase to $30.00 and will be billed through the Finance Office.
Extra Help:
If your son/daughter is struggling with a subject, he/she may contact a teacher for extra help or receive tutoring from a member of the National Honor Society, Monday through Thursday in the Cooperative Learning Room inside the Library Media Center. Help is always available. Make sure your son/daughter takes advantage of it.
Senior Parents:
Did your son/daughter start applying to colleges? Has your son/daughter narrowed his/her list down to schools he/she is really interested in? Now is the time to attend to this very important endeavor. The longer you wait, the more stressful it becomes. Please contact your child's guidance counselor for any questions or concerns.
High School Placement Exam:
The Catholic High School entrance exam is scheduled at Marist on Friday, November 8th
, beginning at 8:00am. There are no classes for Marist students on that day. Do you know someone who has an eighth grader who would like to attend a Catholic school in September 2020 but has not yet registered? Call Mr. Bailey, our Admission Officer at (201) 437-4545 Ext. 225 or email him at

All Saints/All Souls:
We celebrate these two feasts of the Catholic Church by gathering as a school for a Eucharistic Liturgy on Friday, November 1st, which celebrates the Feast of All Saints. Our loved ones who have passed, will be remembered on All Souls Day, which is November 2nd. This is a teaching Liturgy where we intersperse the mass with narration, so as to invite greater participation. We are delighted to have Fr. James Worth celebrate the Mass with us!
Food Drive:
The Food Drive will run from Monday, November 4th until Thanksgiving break, November 26th. Students will collect non-perishable food and toiletries for St. John's Soup Kitchen. Please visit their website at

for more info. Many thanks in advance for your generosity. The Marist spirit extends to our brothers and sisters who suffer in poverty. Here is a list of items we will be collecting. Retreat:
On December 5th our Seniors will spend two days at the Marist Brothers Retreat Center in Esopus. They will be able to reflect on the past few years at Marist and realize the tremendous support they have in one another. Permission slips will be made available next week. We encourage all of our seniors to attend since this is considered our capstone retreat. For more information, please contact Mr. Power at Ext. 220.

LaValla Weekend:
From October 11-14, Brianna Boldrini, Alexandra Ramirez, and Karrington Wilson, accompanied by Ms. E., journeyed to Esopus to participate in the annual LaValla Weekend. This year, they were able to experience a simulation of what happens at the Mexico-US border, when a family tries to cross. They were all challenged mentally, physically, and emotionally, and were inspired to bring their new awareness back to the school to share with their classmates. They were also able to join a long history of Esopus volunteers during the Day of Service on Sunday. It was a truly fulfilling time of giving and thankfulness.

College Admission:
Our Seniors are working hard at applying to colleges and universities across the country. Many are closing in on pressing that "submit" button. We have even had our first acceptance! Congrats to Matthew Benedetto on your acceptance to the University of Iowa and the University of Kansas! If your son or daughter has not talked to you about college yet, please feel free to start that conversation, or reach out to your counselor. We are more than happy to work through the process with you.
HBCU College Fair:
On November 21st, the Counseling Department will be taking about 30 Seniors to NJIT for a college fair of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). The students will be provided with their transcripts and recommendation letters. They will have the chance to be interviewed and accepted to many of these esteemed colleges and universities. Ask your son or daughter if they have signed up for this trip. For more details please visit:

College On-Site Visits:
Marist has been quite busy this year, welcoming a variety of colleges and universities to join us for lunch, and show off what they have to offer. Our Juniors, Seniors, and even some Sophomores have taken advantage of their presence with us, and made that first contact with a school. We have several Instant Decision Days coming up in November through January, so please talk to your son or daughter about which school have visited the school, and if they're taking advantage of these opportunities.
SAT/ACT Deadlines:
All seniors should have taken the SAT and ACT at least once by now, or be scheduled for the November 2nd sitting. If your son or daughter has not, please make sure to contact your Counselor TODAY to have them help you get signed up for the December 1st sitting. The deadline is November 8th for December; fee waivers are still available.
Peer Counseling:
The Freshmen Peer Counseling groups are in full swing meeting once a week to talk about transition issues life as a high school student. Check in with your Freshman son or daughter about their group and what they're talking about.

Homecoming Week:
We had an exciting week in Mid-October filled with school spirit and fun! From Blue and Gold days, and Twin day, to the Homecoming Dance, students and faculty were showing their Marist Spirit.

Special congratulations go out to Mrs. Serrano's 1st Period Class for winning the Waffle Breakfast before the Walk-A-Thon Kicked off. It was a close race, as many students showed their school pride throughout the week, but her class went above and beyond each day. Other congratulations go out to the Faculty for defending their championship title in the Faculty vs. Student's Volleyball game during the Fall Pep Rally!!

I would like to congratulate all coaches and student/athletes for their hard work and dedication this past Fall Season. You have all made the Marist Community very proud.
Winter season is here. Athletic physicals will be needed for students wishing to participate. A SPORTS PHYSICAL PACKET can be obtained and downloaded online through the Marist website. It can also be obtained in the main office or from individual winter coaches.
No student will be allowed to participate in any sport unless an athletic physical is completed and returned before the start of the winter season.
Tryouts for all winter sports will be announced in school. Please come out and support our student/athletes. Did you know you can access schedules and scores through the Marist App?

November is here, a month to be thankful for all the blessings we receive on a daily basis. The colors of Fall give us a great environment to start getting ready for the upcoming holidays. Let's keep the positivity up, let's be kind to one another and start embracing the magical spirit of the holiday season.
Marist Haunted Asylum (Oct 25th -26th)
We are so grateful for such a successful Haunted Asylum. The MPA and the Student Council worked so hard to bring the scariest possible haunted experience, and we did it! Two nights of two communities screaming their hearts out, a complete success. Thank you for your commitment, support and sense of service. You made the difference!
We will like to give a big thank you to those parents who volunteered night after night for a whole week, as well as those who showed up to be guides and cleaned up on Sunday. Thank you also to our makeup artists for a job well done. Our students looked scary and so realistic!

Now let's talk about the stars of our event: our kids, the students, the actors! They were AMAZING. They brought our ideas to reality and worked hard for two days without complaining, working in the heat and dark with enthusiastic energy and love. To all of our students that honored us with their time and dedication, THANK YOU! As you see it takes a village!
Paint Night Out (Nov 16th)
Our next event is on November 16th, we will be painting a handmade piece of wood art. There are three options and the painter will be choosing which one they would like to work on. Wood art is a good thank you gift for your Thanksgiving feast hosts or to decorate your own house for the holiday season. Come, enjoy, paint, it is a BYOB event. Food and desserts are going to be sold.
