“Can You Really Communicate?”

A man answering his doorbell admitted a visitor and a big shaggy dog. As they sat talking, the dog bumped into an end table sending a lamp crashing to the floor. After chewing on the rug for a while the dog began to roam through the house, his progress marked by the sound of breaking glass. When the dog finally jumped on the sofa with his muddy feet and curled up for a nap, the outraged householder was unable to contain himself any longer.

“Don’t you think you should have trained your dog better than that?” he burst out.

“My dog?” exclaimed the visitor in surprise. “I thought it was your dog.”

How often have we blamed someone else for something that they probably thought was our fault? Many psychologists report that people’s number one problem is “a lack of communication.” What if we really talked and listened to each other?

In fact, we even communicate after our physical life is over. Here is a kind of question that we typically avoid: “Have Your Read Your Obituary?”

Many of us are acquainted with the name Alfred Nobel, the well-known Swedish chemist who invented dynamite. A strange thing happened when Alfred’s brother died. A newspaper by accident published the wrong obituary—that of Alfred, rather than that of his deceased brother. When Alfred read his own obituary, guilt overwhelmed him. The newspaper story related that he had created a substance for war, a substance that had caused much death and injury and devastation.

This moment so convicted Alfred Nobel that he set up a foundation for an honor that we know today as the Nobel Peace Prize. If you had a chance to write your obituary today, how would it read? What changes in your life would you want to make to make? How would your obituary read if you could write it the way you would want it? All of us have choices about how people remember us. What is your choice and how would you like it communicated to posterity?
