From the Chair ...

Greetings Handbell Musicians.Brian Tervo

This is the last Campanologist article where I will be addressing Area 10 as Chair.  On October 1st, Diane Barnes will be taking over as Chair, I will move into the Past-Chair role, and we will be announcing a new Chair-Elect and a new Treasurer based on the election results which are currently being tabulated.

I wanted to take this opportunity to thank everyone in Area 10 for your support over the past two years.  I really enjoyed my time as Chair.  I had the opportunity to try a few new things with our Area 10 Conference format.  Some of these ideas, like the All-Star Choir, were very successful.  Other ideas were less successful and will either need to be adjusted or abandoned in future events.  Regardless of their success, I appreciate the willingness and support of everyone on the Board and in Area 10 to try something a little different.  To continue to advance our art, we have to be willing to periodically take risks and try new things.

There are a couple individuals on the board I would like to especially recognize.  The first is Diane Barnes.  A number of times when there was a task I needed to delegate, Diane was frequently the first person to step up and take on the work.  When I review my list of responsibilities for the Area 10 Conference, I find that Diane's name is on this list more than any other board member.  She was also someone I consulted frequently when I needed to make a difficult decision.  We are in very good hands with her taking over as Chair, and I only hope that I am able to support her the next two years as she helped me the previous two years.

Another person I want to recognize is Phyllis Tincher.  She served on the Area 10 Board as Chair more than ten years ago, and has since remained on the board as our Campanologist editor.  She was an invaluable resource whenever I had questions about processes and procedures or whenever I needed a historical perspective on an issue.  She was also very patient with me when I was slow to get my Campanologist articles written.  We are all very blessed to have someone like Phyllis volunteering her time for more than a decade to our organization.

Looking ahead to the next few years, we definitely have some challenges.  As Chair, we started the process of filing for 501c3 non-profit status, and it's critical that we follow through with this work so we eventually become a non-profit organization.  The last two Area 10 Conferences have lost money for the area, and we are no longer in a financial position to risk organizing another event which could result in similar losses.  As I mentioned a few months ago, we need to rethink how we organize events and the type of events we plan.  With your input, I am confident that we will be able to plan events that meet the needs of our membership while being financially viable for Area 10.  I look forward to helping the Area 10 Board work through these and other challenges the next two years serving as Past Chair.

Handchime Loan Program thank you

 handchimes

by Shosh Meyer, Oregon Chair

Christine L. Sinibaldi from the Kaiser/Salem, Oregon school district and her 400 students sent a big thank you to Area 10 for the use of the 3 octaves of Malmark handchimes during the 2013-2014 school year.  Last year Oregon had 3 requests for chimes and were privileged to use one of Washington's unassigned sets.  "Thank you from my 400 + students and me.  What a delight to make music together ringing! We all learned so much."

The 2014-2015 recipients of Malmark and Schulmerich handchime loan program sets from Oregon are Susan Schilke representing Mary's Woods Retirement Community in Lake Oswego and Georgia Roelof from Congregational Church of Lincoln City. Both directors are excited at the potential of handchimes in their music programs.  Georgia wrote, "Congregational Church has a vibrant music program with organ, piano and vocal choir. On special occasions, additional instruments are incorporated.  Handchimes in our church service would be a special addition and could easily be combined with the existing program."

If interested in borrowing the handchimes during the 2015-2016 season, contact your State Chair or go to the Area 10 Handbell Musicians of America website for more information.

May 15 & 16, 2015
Green River Community College
Auburn, Washington

Clinician: Michael Glasgow

We are excited to welcome Michael Glasgow as our primary clinician - he brings energy and musicality to the podium and is a treat for ringers to work with! The event will start Friday evening with rehearsal for the Rainier Choir, a Bronze-level conference choir requiring a separate application. Saturday will be filled with division and massed rehearsals, classes, and vendor shopping opportunities, and will end with our final concert showcasing all our hard work.
