No piece of solo music for cello is greater, or more popularly known, than Johann Sebastian Bach's Cello Suite No. 1 in G Major. Better known as the "Prelude," the first of six Baroque suites Bach composed between 1717 and 1723, the piece has appeared "in hundreds of TV shows and films."

"It's so famous, that if you don't remember its title, "you can just google 'that famous cello song' and it will invariably pop up."

What is it about this piece that so appeals? Its constant, rhythmic movement conceals "what's most compelling about it"- its simplicity. "The whole thing just takes up two pages of music, and it's composed for an instrument with only four strings.

Bach's cello suites are the Everest of the cello's repertory, offering a guide to nearly everything a cello can do-as well as, many believe, charting a remarkably complete anatomy of emotion and aspiration.

What's interesting about Bach's six cello suites is that they were written by a non-cellist, the first non-cellist composer to give the cello its first big break as a lead actor.

Composed just before Bach moved to Leipzig, the cello suites, now musical and emotional touchstones, were little known until the 1900s. It was thought, even by some who knew of them, that they were merely études, nothing you'd want to perform in public.

Now, it is perhaps the most famous classic icon in the world!

IN THE BASSMENT

The concept of splaying out frets in a fan pattern was patented by Ralph Novak, who builds instruments under the name Novax-but most bass players' first exposure to this eye-catching concept was through Dingwall Basses, a high-end builder that has focused on fanned-fret instruments since 1993. With the patent on fanned frets expired, Ibanez has taken the opportunity to introduce this concept applied to its highly popular SR series.

How Jaco Learned Bass

This Tony Bacon interview with Jaco Pastorius took place at a London hotel in the summer of 1976. Jaco wanted to talk mainly about his first solo album which had just been released. Jaco was on tour with Weather Report, which he'd joined some months earlier. The band had arrived in England the previous day following concerts in Denmark, Switzerland, Sweden, Italy, and France. Tony says: I couldn't have known back then what the future had in store for the 24-year-old Jaco.
GREAT GEAR

The "power cable improves amplified sound" assertion is one of the audio world's more snake-oil-infused claims. However, this premise is based on the fact that U.S. building codes require homes to be wired with a minimum of 14-AWG electrical cable, but most of us power up our amps with generic 18-AWG cords with molded ends. No, our guitar signal doesn't pass through this cable, but the efficiency of the AC supply feeding the amplifier's power transformer and related stages can, in theory, have an impact on an amp's performance and, thus, its sound.
