Parish News
Beginning November 3 -
Tuesday & Thursday Mass Moving to 8:00 a.m.

About a month ago, I asked parishioners to offer their opinion as to whether we should change the Tuesday and Thursday morning Mass time to 8:00 a.m. Most agreed that a uniform Mass time would be a good thing. A couple of people did voice the concern that 8:00 a.m. Mass does not help those who would like to go to Mass before work. While this is true, no one has ever asked for a workers’ Mass in the eight years that I have been here.

Over the past five years, we have taken a count of people at each Mass. The trend is that in late Fall and Winter, the 7:30 a.m. Mass has the least amount of people. By making all Masses at 8:000 a.m., I hope it will increase attendance throughout the winter season.

It is good to mention at this time that our neighboring and collaborative parish St. Alphonsus offers a 7:00 a.m. Mass for those who would like to attend Mass before work. I know a few of our parishioners attend St. Alphonsus’ early Mass when they want to attend Mass before work.

Therefore, beginning with the first Tuesday of November, we will have all weekday Masses at 8:00 a.m. As Spring approaches, I will evaluate this practice and decide if we will continue it during the Summer months of 2021. Thank you to all who weighed in on this matter.

Bishop Don Hying on Voting
Last Sunday, I quoted from Bishop Don Hying’s article on forming our conscience in regards to the upcoming elections. You will find his full article here.

Church Pews Available
The Parish has several Church pews that were removed from the choir loft available to anyone willing to pick them up and haul them away. They range in length from seven to eighteen feet. If interested, please contact George Pitman at 414-321-1965, extension 106, or via email at gpitman@stjohns-grfd.org.

St. John’s Life Chain
The Respect Life Committee would like to thank all 63 parish members who came out for the Life Chain last Sunday. They add that Christians need to be seen out on the streets to witness to God’s life-saving thread that runs through His words. They remind us all that God knew us before we were born and we must witness for the preborn so that they too will be recognized as His children and be protected from the moment of conception until natural death.

Meanwhile, the Respect Life Committee also wants to thank those who have been participating in the 40 Days for Life Campaign. Since it began on September 23, 102 lives have been saved. They ask that you continue to pray not only for the mothers, that they be open to life, but also for the sidewalk counselors who have only minutes to talk with the mothers before they enter the abortion facility in Milwaukee.
24-Hour Perpetual Adoration

St. John’s is fortunate to have 24-hour Perpetual Adoration. Please take advantage of this beautiful opportunity to stay close to God in these difficult times. Hand sanitizer is available in the Adoration entrance (south side of Church), and we ask that you practice social distancing and stay at least six feet from others while in Church.
The Holy Name Society will celebrate Corporate Communion at the 8:00 a.m. Mass on Sunday, Oct. 11. A general meeting will follow in the gym, NO BREAKFAST.

All men 16 and older are welcome and fathers are encouraged to bring their sons 8 years and older.

The Holy Name Society will pray the Rosary at 7:20 a.m. in the church on Sunday Oct.11.

Twenty-Eighth Sunday in
Ordinary Time
October 10/11, 2020

How easy it is, especially in these times, to be consumed by the cares and distractions of the “here and now,” forgetting about what matters most — living for the Kingdom of Heaven. With its emphasis on the virtuous use of our Time, Talent, and Treasure, the stewardship way of life allows us to embrace daily life and all its demands — with eternity in mind.

How do we keep focused on the Kingdom of Heaven? St. Paul shares his secret for an eternity-driven life. In our Second Reading from his Letter to the Philippians, Paul says, “I know how to live in humble circumstances; I know also how to live with abundance. In every circumstance and in all things, I have learned the secret of being well-fed and going hungry, of living in abundance and of being in need.” In other words, Paul has learned to live the stewardship way of life.

What is the secret? It is this: “I can do all things in him who strengthens me.” How? Through this: “My God will fully supply whatever you need, in accord with his glorious riches in Christ Jesus.” It is so simple! But it is not easy. It takes both courage and humility to live this way. God will supply these to us if we ask.

Walking...

Each year in October, our Archdiocese sponsors the Soles for Catholic Education Walk. This walk is traditionally held at Mount Mary University, with several thousand students, teachers, and families  gathering to celebrate Catholic Education. The walk is a great way to touch base with families, catch up with alumni, and make new friends.

This year, we have chosen to celebrate Catholic Education right here at St. John the Evangelist. Our students will be walking to celebrate St. John the Evangelist School. We have a tremendous amount to celebrate, most importantly, that we are back in school, full time.

As you read this article, we have completed our fifth week of school. We have completed our first student assessments, identifying some of the gaps in learning that resulted from our time apart last spring. Our teachers are working so hard to help fill those gaps.

We would be so grateful if you would join us in celebrating by sponsoring one of our students as we walk together. A $25 donation will sponsor one of our walkers, and help us to reach our goal of $4,000. Our greatest need right now is for technology. Our smartboards are approaching their tenth birthdays, and we continually work to update our teacher laptop computers.

It’s never been easier to donate. There are two options available. The first, and simplest, is to send a check, or bring cash, to the parish office in an envelope marked “Soles for Catholic Education donation.” We will make sure that the donation is credited to our SJE Soles Walk account, and that you are recognized here at school on our donation board. Or, if you would prefer, you can make a donation directly to the Soles Walk website by texting Soles64 to 71777. You will be directed to the SJE walk donation page. Feel free to share this information with family and friends. All donations of any size will help us meet our goal, and support us as we celebrate Catholic Education.

Mike Aquilina, author of over forty books and an expert on early Church history, shares how the faithful witness of Christian families amidst the trials and persecutions of the Church in the first centuries of its existence led to the rapid expansion of Christianity and the conversion of the Roman Empire. Mike relates how fidelity to prayer, faithful attendance of Sunday Mass, and love of neighbor offered a powerful witness to a culture that, in many respects, is similar to our own.
