Friday Round-Up
Aug 28, 2020
|
So much is going on this week that covers many topics.
As we were preparing this email yesterday, we thought of the character Dug from the movie "Up." For those who have seen the film, there will be many "Squirrel!" moments as you read ahead.

A few highlights:
- Agile management replaces annual planning and long, painful meetings with weekly or monthly sprints.
- Move all meetings toward collaborative problem-solving.
- Another great way to ensure teams are engaged is to elevate accountability among peers.
This resonated with me the most: "Leaders can embed generosity as a behavioral norm by routinely asking whoever makes a report or does a presentation, 'What can any of us do to be of service?'"
In my role at the Chamber, it is a natural fit for me to ask you “How can I be of service?” Seriously, you know how to reach me, do not hesitate to connect with me.
“COVID-19: Saving thousands of lives and trillions in livelihoods: Ending lockdowns alone won’t restore confidence or growth. Only when the novel coronavirus is under control will economic growth resume." The article was written by Sarun Charumilind, Ezra Greenberg, Jessica Lamb, and Shubham Singhal. It is not a quick read (9 pages) but has some serious data relevant to our times.

I often talk of collaboration and connecting. I feel this community is built on collaboration and here is a perfect example: Cypress Cove, Hope Healthcare, Lee Health, NCH Healthcare System, Physicians’ Primary Care of Southwest Florida, Shell Point Retirement Community, Cape Coral Technical College, Fort Myers Technical College, iTECH - Immokalee Technical College, Lorenzo Walker Technical College, and CareerSource SWFL - all FutureMakers Coalition partners - are teaming up to hold a free online informational event on Thursday, September 10 from 2 to 4 p.m. where interested participants can learn about essential careers as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) or Medical Assistant (MA).
Anyone interested in getting a start with a career in healthcare is encouraged to register for the online event. The goal is to find interested students and help them get their tuition and related fees paid for, so that they are ready for a new career in just one year. Here is the full press release.
As part of the FutureMakers team, I wanted to share this opportunity with you. This may not be the right fit for you but you may know someone that is interested in becoming a Certified Nursing Assistant, (C.N.A.) or Medical Assistant (M.A.).

Last Friday, our Chamber’s Executive Committee hosted Florida’s Chief Financial Officer, Jimmy Patronis on a short but informative call. He reviewed information on the budget, the effect of the devastating loss of revenue due to COVID and some ways our State leaders will maintain the balanced budget. This will affect the dynamics of the 2021 Legislative Session. Florida is 2nd in most received PPP funds and he also shared that credit card debt did not increase so far. CFO Patronis also reminded us about FL Treasure Hunt where you can find unclaimed funds. I tried and found $73! Here is the link if you would like to search.

"Still reeling from the devastating effects of COVID-19, many small businesses are doing what they can to keep their doors open and employees paid. Now, some of the same personal injury trial lawyers who sue local businesses have worked to get Amendment 2 on the ballot in November. This extremely flawed amendment which would raise Florida's minimum wage to $15 an hour would clearly slow progress Florida's economy has made since reopening in phases during COVID-19. In the coming weeks, we will be providing Chamber members with post-COVID data that supports the vital need to vote "No" on this amendment. Voting "Yes" on this Amendment would slow Florida's economy which we are in the process of rebuilding. Aside from negatively impacting those on fixed incomes by driving up inflation, raising the minimum wage to $15 an hour would ultimately do away with hundreds of thousands of entry-level training jobs while pushing certain jobs to neighboring states or - in the case of McDonald's - to automation. Please sign our petition supporting free enterprise without job killing mandates such as Amendment 2."

Our Chamber has two Referral groups, Path 2 Profit (P2P), that meet twice a month. They exist to establish a structured meeting time, place, and environment for qualified business professionals to gather for the purpose of helping each other succeed in business through the exchange of business referrals and current marketplace information. The groups are industry exclusive and they are both looking to build out their current groups. Here is a list of potential (but not exclusive) industries they would like to invite to their groups: Please email me to get connected to the appropriate group.

The Foundation board will continue this conversation at their September meeting and from there, I will share upcoming goals.

I have to share another seamless experience with Lee Health. On Tuesday, Spada Salon & Day Spa hosted a Lee Health Blood Drive at their location. I stopped in after work on my way home and was in and out in under 40 minutes (and got a swaggy mask too!) I also put myself on their “call list” so I can do this more consistently.
I would like to wish everyone a great weekend. I am looking forward to seeing Elizabeth on Saturday as we have plans for fresh pasta, fresh mozzarella and great wine at DeRomo’s to celebrate our family’s summer birthdays!
Stay Safe!
Colleen
