HSS Connection Design: A New Approach

AISC 360-16 has some significant changes in the design of connections to rectangular HSS. Engineers have no doubt noticed the removal of some of the HSS connection design tables, however the limits of applicability included in the design tables became an impetus for AISC to provide a more flexible design process for HSS connections.

In the January 2021 SE University session, Kim Olson, PE, from Nucor and presenting on behalf of the Steel Tube Institute, presented Navigating AISC 360-16 HSS Connection Design. Kim identified how the prescriptive nature of Chapter K has been changed to more closely match the rest of the Specification. She also explained the reasoning behind the changes to the limits of applicability and variables in Chapter K and showed how the equations for connecting to the web of a wide flange member from Chapter J can be used to derive similar equations for connecting to rectangular HSS...
The New ASCE Code of Ethics

Are you a member of ASCE? You may be aware that ASCE has recently adopted a new Code of Ethics for its members which is the first comprehensive change to the code since 1974. Although the new guidance applies only to its membership, the document often influences states’ ethics laws which would then apply to all licensed engineers in that state. Thus, the changes may have far reaching effects in years to come.

In the February 2021 SE University Ethics Session, Matthew R. Rechtien, PE, Esq., from Walter P Moore, presented Engineering Ethics Update: The New Model Code. Matt explained ASCE’s stated rationale and goals for the changes made to their Code of Ethics. He also reviewed what was added or removed from the code and what changes were made and the implications of those changes to practicing engineers

In order to truly assess the vast difference between the old Code of Ethics and the new document, it would be best to read through both versions of the code to be familiar with how the document has morphed from a canon based model to a new, more concise code. The ASCE Code of Ethics page includes the full version of the new Code of Ethics as well as a link to the previous version...
SEU Speaker Inspires Organizations: CREATE Community Studios and Institute for the Musical Arts and SE2050
In September 2020, SE University welcomed Otto Schwarz, PE, SE, from Ryan Biggs | Clark Davis, to present Concrete Mix Design. Otto designated CREATE Community Studios (https://createcommunitystudios.org/) and Institute for the Musical Arts (www.ima.org) for our SEU Speaker Inspires donations for the month.

CREATE Community Studios exists to ensure the beneficial experience of art-making be affordable and accessible to everyone. Their goal is to use expressive arts as an equalizer across cultural and economic barriers, and for participants to learn how to use art as an expressive medium to increase their general well-being.

The Institute for the Musical Arts in Goshen, MA supports women and girls in music and music-related businesses.

Otto commented, “I’ve suggested both of these local organizations for two reasons. The first is that I believe that the arts and the sciences have equal impact on our lives, and a world without either is lacking. Small, local organizations like these have the most direct and intimate impact on the surrounding communities and the individuals within them. The second is that it is these same small organizations that will have been disproportionally hit by the COVID-19 epidemic and a dollar donated here has a bigger impact than a dollar donated to an organization that has a national supporting audience. As the economy re-adjusts in response to times like these, it is often the arts that suffer first and the most. We should strive to ensure they survive.”
In October 2020, SE University welcomed Megan Stringer, PE, SE, and Gina Kope, PE, from Holmes Structures, to present Sustaining Structures: Embodied Carbon. Megan and Gina designated SE2050 (https://se2050.org/) for our SEU Speaker Inspires donation for the month.

Megan shared, “The Structural Engineers 2050 Commitment Program (SE 2050) is the U.S. structural engineering profession’s response to getting to net zero embodied carbon by 2050. I have been inspired by my fellow SE 2050 committee members and the volume of work a volunteer group of structural engineers have be able to accomplish in a short amount of time.”

STATES WITH UPCOMING LICENSE RENEWALS

As we enter the 2nd quarter of 2021, there are a number of states with upcoming license renewals. If additional hours are needed, please contact Lisa Willard to discuss how we can help you. 
 
Engineers in the following states have license renewals due by June 30th (bold states expire by April 30th):
 
In the following states, engineers should renew their license by the specified date:

Kansas - Last Names M-Z (April 30)
Oregon - Last Names G-K (June 30th)
Kentucky - Last Names A-K (June 30th)
Utah (March 31st)
Louisiana (March 31st)
West Virginia (June 30th)
 
In addition to the states listed above, there are other states that may require renewal based on your initial date of licensure or other rules for that state. Please check your license information to confirm your renewal dates.

On April 7th, Ashley Cagle, PE, SE, from WoodWorks, will present Structural Engineering of Light-Frame Wood over Concrete Podium Structures. This session will be held from 12:30 - 2:00 pm EDT.

Handouts and registration emails for this session will be sent to SE University companies on Friday, April 2nd.
NOTE: This session is one week earlier than usual.


SERVICEABILITY FOR THE PRACTICING ENGINEER

On May 12th, Emily Guglielmo, SE, PE, from Martin/Martin, will present Serviceability for the Practicing Engineer for SE University. This session will be held from 12:30 - 2:00 pm EDT.
