YVPN & Jovenes SANOS Team Up
for Empowering Youth!
On January 29th, YVPN &
Jovenes SANOS came together to host
Safety HEALS Community:
Inclusive Community Change Through Inter-generational Partnerships Workshop. The purpose of the workshop was to discuss the intersection of public safety & community health and how inter-generational partnerships can create impactful, long lasting community change.
The workshop objectives included:
- Provide space for youth voice & wisdom
- Build capacity of adults to partner with young people by learning about best practices
- Fostering relationships for acting on opportunities to partner for inclusive community efforts

United 4 Youth
The two United 4 Youth teams, made up of funded YVPN partners in Watsonville and Santa Cruz, are continuing to work together to launch their collaborative projects aimed at providing diversified support for local youth and families. We are excited to report on these group's efforts:
- In Watsonville, Pajaro Valley Prevention and Student Assistance, Community Action Board, Youth Now, Volunteer Center, Conflict Resolution Center & Living Evolution, are working on the design of a streamlined process for intake and referral for shared clients. The process of being in partnership has led to an increase in cross promotion of services and communications. They are also looking at ways to help meet community & internal needs for training and education.
- In Santa Cruz, Community Bridges, Your Future Is Our Business, Boys and Girls Club, Monarch Services, Walnut Ave Family and Women's Center & Yoga for All Movement are working together to offer ongoing activities for the youth and residents at the Emerald Bay Apartments. The weekly homework club currently has 5 dedicated peer tutors, and monthly yoga classes are seeing regular attendance. Project partners are planning on gathering more community input for workshop topics that can be offered to the residents. Boys and Girls Club organized a Soccer Day in the fall and is working on organizing another one.
We look forward to reporting the ongoing progress as these projects continue!

Coordinator's Corner:
It's not goodbye, it's see you later!
After spending 4 years with YVPN, as an intern and then as the Coordinator, Julie Burr is headed to the "other Bay Area". As she leaves her hometown of Santa Cruz, Julie reflects on her time in this position saying "I am forever shaped by this place and this work. I am in awe of and grateful to all of the amazing champions, ch
ange-makers & risk-
takers tackling the issues our community faces."
As YVPN evolves and enters its next phase, Julie can attest to the progress she's seen with the network over the years. "At our table and across the county we are working together differently. We are collaborating, sharing resources, and lifting each other up. We have also made progress in being able to tackle some of the most difficult root causes of violence, including trauma & inequity." Julie is passionate about social justice and is proud to have been part of the United Way team and the broader YVPN while they work to confront these challenging and critical issues.
Looking ahead, Julie anticipates this network will continue to blaze new trails as they seek long term, sustainable systems change
s that support youth, family & community thriving. "I see greatness for YVPN and all of Santa Cruz County as they continue to work together to shift norms, center the voices of those most impacted by the issues, and address inequities." No doubt she'll be seeking those same outcomes in her work up in the Bay Area.

Cracking the Codes
Film Screening
The Santa Cruz County Community Coalition to Overcome Racism (SCCCCOR) presents "Cracking the Codes," a film about the causes and consequences of systemic racial inequity, presented with small group sharing. This event will take place on Saturday, February 8th, 1-5 pm @ The Resource Center for Nonviolence.

In collaboration with the Thriving Immigrants Collaborative (TIC), Community Action Board (CAB) will host an immigration convergence
for cross-sector leaders & advocates on:
Friday, February 21st, 8:30 am - 4 pm @ Cabrillo College
This event will leverage the wisdom, expertise & open minds of local leaders to envision actionable next steps our county can take to create a community where immigrants are supported to thrive. Through networking, training from subject experts & focused dialogue CAB & TIC will elevate the local conversation around immigration and empower leaders from all sectors to make changes that support the well-being of immigrants.

Help inspire youth by giving two, 22 minute presentations about your career to middle school students. Explain what your career entails, answer students' questions, and share the in's and outs of your job! Nothing is more powerful than being able to look a child in the eye, speak directly to them, and point to something in or outside the classroom that they can be more aware of or do to create change within their own backyards and communities.

BLACK HISTORY MONTH
EVENTS!
Black History Month is an annual celebration of achievements by African Americans and a time for recognizing the central role they played in U.S. history. Also known as African American History Month, the event was the brainchild of noted historian Carter G. Woodson and other prominent African Americans. Since 1976, every U.S. president has officially designated the month of February as Black History Month.
To honor and celebrate 2020's Black History Month, we have curated a calendar of several events happening in our community. We highly encourage you to come out and show your support by participating in these events:
