GOHi team presents at One Health Central and Eastern Africa Conference

Over 350 participants from 30 countries convened in Kampala, Uganda for the 3rd Annual One Health Central and Eastern Africa Conference, which took place July 24-26. This year's theme was "Harnessing One Health for Global Health Security." Regional Associate Director Desalegne Mengesha Degefaw, Kenya Country Liaison Officer Robert Onsare and Program Manager Ashley Bersani presented two keynote and two poster presentations during the three-day event. Essential synergies and catalytic conversations regarding One Health research findings and project opportunities with partners across government, academic and philanthropic institutions raised GOHi's profile with international stakeholders as well as current and future collaborators.

Rabies surveillance training in Addis Ababa

With support from the Centers for Disease Control's (CDC) Global Health Security cooperative agreement, and via a partnership with several Ethiopian institutions, four GOHi team members and a team member from the Global Alliance for Rabies Control conducted a hands-on rabies surveillance training for nearly 30 Ethiopian professionals in Addis Ababa from July 22-26. Ethiopia is known to have one of the highest burdens of rabies. Dogs are known to be the species most responsible for human exposure, resulting in over 98% of the human cases. Vaccinating dogs against the disease is crucial. Together with the Ethiopian government and the CDC, GOHi has been working to reduce the burden of rabies in Ethiopia through the Global Health Security Agenda.

GOHi Executive Member Dr. Robert Baiocchi, awarded $200,000 Pelotonia Grant

Robert Baiocchi, MD, PhD, was awarded the grant to work with the Ethiopian Public Health Institute and a visiting scholar to assess the origin and significance of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) in patients using DNA methylation and nonpore sequencing. Baiocchi was also awarded an additional $170,000 for work linking the Ohio State and Addis sites from the Comprehensive Cancer Center Division of Hematology Sponsored Research Program. These awards will help Baiocchi's team to better understand the regional differences that exist in EBV genome sequences in HIV-positive patients in the United States in comparison to Ethiopia. This information is critical to develop vaccine strategies to prevent EBV-driven lymphomas that are common in Sub-Saharan Africa.

New Gates Foundation project officially launched

Ohio State's College of Veterinary Medicine is one of three veterinary colleges that have received a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation for a two-year project to improve veterinary services in developing countries. The project involves creation of a digital platform to house educational resources and teaching tools for use by veterinary faculty in Ethiopia. GOHi Executive Member Amanda Berrian, DVM, MPH, PhD is the primary contact for the project at Ohio State.

Fifteen free online One Health courses available to the public

The Global One Health initiative has launched a collection of 15 online courses that are being offered under the online Canvas Network. Thirteen are currently live and accepting new students. These courses are free and open to the public and cover aspects of agriculture, human biology, veterinary medicine and public health. The collection can be found online through Canvas Network.

Ohio State's Wexner Medical Center is recognized as an Antimicrobial Stewardship Center of Excellence

The Infectious Diseases Society of America recently named the Wexner Medical Center one of 23 centers deserving of the recognition. Antimicrobial resistance is one of the greatest threats facing healthcare on a global, national and individual level. The core criteria for the Center of Excellence program place emphasis on an institution's ability to implement stewardship protocols to optimize the treatment of infections and reduce adverse events associated with antibiotic use by leveraging electronic health record systems and providing ongoing education to help clinicians improve the quality of patient care while promoting patient safety. Congratulations to GOHi member, Kurt Stevenson, MD, head of the Antimicrobial Stewardship Program at the Wexner Medical Center, and all contributing parties on this important designation.

Presidential Advisory Council on Combating Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria report

On July 10, the Presidential Advisory Council on Combating Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria released a report with recommendations on combating antimicrobial resistance. The council lists the following as priorities for the U.S. Government National Action Plan: continue to research, develop and implement best practice interventions, develop and implement incentives, use data sources across One Health domains to improve surveillance and stewardship, dedicate funds to enhance collaboration among federal, state and local programs and provide resources to study and support effective programs that promote awareness of the among the public and professionals.
