Message from the Principal
Dear DHS staff, students, and families,

This is quite a busy time of year. We are already headed into our final week of classes before our summative assessment (aka finals) week. Students are encouraged to connect with their teachers regarding assessment details. Please be reminded that the ARC is open throughout the day, as well as before and after school to support students. Best wishes to our students as they head into the summative assessments.

Sadly, during this time, we are also grappling with the tragic school shooting at Oxford High School in Michigan. Our hearts go out to this grieving school community. While we navigate the complex emotions surrounding this tragedy and other violence that we are seeing in our nation, I'd like to remind our school community of resources and tools available to support students here at DHS, in order to maintain a safe and secure school environment. First and foremost, please take time at home to discuss our emergency safety protocol at DHS. This year, our students and staff have conducted two active threat drills using the ALICE (Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, Evacuate) protocol. Second, always remember,  if you see something, say something. Students are encouraged to talk to a staff member or report a concern via the D113 tipline which can be accessed via the D113 app,  at https://www.dist113.org/Page/3096, or by texting or calling (847) 262-3363.
In the event of an emergency, call 911. Finally, please be reminded that counseling services are available to all students when they require additional support. While our counselor team works with students on academic and post-high school planning, school counselors are also trained mental health professionals who are here to support students with their social-emotional needs. Students can access their school counselor by emailing them, scheduling an appointment, or visiting their counselor during drop-in hours.

Sincerely,
Principal Kathryn Anderson

Supporting Students Before Summative Assessments
Challenge Success offers two great ways parents/guardians can support their student before final summative assessments:
  • Help them realize the importance of sleep and maintaining good sleep hygiene. Read more about the research and get tips for a better night of sleep.
  • Maintain a strong relationship with them through open communication, which includes listening & empathizing, talking one-on-one or side-by-side, and watching your tone and choice of words. Read more for concrete ideas from the Center for Parent and Teen Communication.
