Happy Valentine's Day!

     February 14 is a day set aside to show love. Candy and flowers are popular, but what about our time? Make time for those you love. All of us also have a love for handbells. Are you sharing that love for our instrument with those around you? Some ways to do that are to be on time for rehearsal, be early to help set up, attend an event to help you grow as a handbell musician, and give your all during each rehearsal. I'm sure you can think of many other ways.

   All the information and registration forms for our Area 10 Conference in Corvallis, July 7-9, are in the article below. Make plans now to join us for Ringing, Reunions and Remembrances.

   If your choir gives a spring concert, please let me know the information so I can add it to our list of events. This is a great source for getting the word out about concerts.

   Please forward this newsletter to your choir members and to anyone else who would be interested in all the concerts and events. Encourage them to subscribe to the newsletter. Click "Join our mailing list" at the bottom of the left column or click the newsletter link on our website, area10.handbellmusicians.org. With permission, I can also add names and addresses.

Notes from the Chair ...

Greetings from Montana!

    Cold, snowy, icy, grey Montana.  It's not exactly my beloved Big Sky Country today.  Can you tell I'm experiencing the winter doldrums?
Does your choir experience the winter doldrums?  It seems like we carry through fall and Christmas so well.  The fall brings the new start to the season:  back with old friends, maybe some new ones, new music to work on.  Christmas is full of excitement:  great music, concerts, getting to play at different locations.

   However, once January rolls around, choirs can stagnate.  Everyone is tired from the stresses of Christmas, musical and otherwise, and maybe you've lost a few ringers.  How do we keep things rolling?

     Well, here's a thought.  How about getting your choir excited about one of the many festivals happening this spring?  Here in Montana, we have the Big Sky Festival the end of April.  It is a wonderful event that usually brings 200 -250 ringers together for a Friday/Saturday event with a great nationally known clinician.  It is a chance to not only ring some great music under a great baton, but also reconnect with all our bell friends from across the state.

     No matter where you are, there is a festival this spring within your reach.  Check the events calendar in this newsletter and see which ones interest you.  Check out the repertoire lists; maybe there's one full of pieces your choir would love to try.  Festivals are great places to ring music that your choir maybe can't quite swing on its own.  The clinicians coming to our area are amazing; maybe there's one you've always wanted meet.

    We humans always seem to need something to look forward to.  Whether it's the flush of spring or an upcoming handbell event, pick the prize you need to keep you and your ringers motivated!
Diane Hould
How Can Little Ole Me Make a BIG DIFFERENCE to  Area 10 (without necessarily chairing any committees?)?

    Let me start by asking:
  • Are you mildly (or passionately) fond of ringing handbells?
  • Do you feel good about yourself when you learn something new or discover a new way of doing challenging things?
  • Do you enjoy attending concerts by excellent handbell musicians?
   If you answered "yes" to any of these, then you can make a difference and I can tell you how in one word . . . membership!

WHY?
    Without each other, handbells would be a dead art form! We learn with each other. We learn from each other. We learn when we experience what other handbell musicians are doing. That's impossible from the quiet of our rehearsal room alone.

    Because we've reached out first across the nation and more recently across the world, we know a ton about making great handbell music as ensembles both large and small and as soloists. The quality of our music making is soaring and opportunities are growing.

YES, IT IS AFFORDABLE
* For $10, yes, just ten bucks a year!
    Any organization (your church, school, community ensemble), which has a Guild membership, may bring all their musicians under a single umbrella. Sub membership is linked to the organizational account. Each sub member has individual access to the vast online resources of our website and has their own unique login and password. Love your musicians? Treat them to sub-memberships as a choir!

* For $8 a month!
   Any organization or individual may be a full handbell musician supporting member for a small monthly cost. This entitles you to tons of online information, special Members Only opportunities like Member Chats and Member Notes and more, plus Overtones options for your ensemble or for yourself at national events. AND, for every membership, Area 10 receives a $10 rebate which goes a very long way in funding scholarships, supporting the Chime Loan program and the good works of Area 10 on behalf of all of us. Full Handbell Musician Memberships cost $90.

* For $5.75 a month
   Retired as a handbell musician but still want to be connected and support the art form? A Retired Musician Membership is possible even on a fixed income. And, Area 10 still receives a $10 rebate for your membership. Full Retired Handbell Musician Memberships cost $65.

   Take the plunge right now! Reach out and ask your ensemble members and your ringing friends and colleagues to join, too. Together, we make a difference for the art form we love.

    Click here for a membership form or go to handbellmusicians.org and choose "Join the Guild" at the top of the page. There is also a link under the index to this newsletter.

    Oh, and about those committees . . . we'd all love for you to be a part. Interested? Click here to contact our Area 10 Chair, Diane Hould. She'll be thrilled to connect you to just the right person.
