Last month I had the opportunity to spend a week with Bev and Etienne Wenger-Trayner in Northern California. The Wenger-Trayners are pioneers in the field of social learning theory, and have devoted their lives to the development of Communities of Practice. (Those of you who attended the 2018 annual conference in Atlanta may remember that the Wenger-Trayners were our keynoters who facilitated several fishbowl conversations among members of several of our newly formed Communities of Practice. Their presentations at our conference demonstrated their unique capacity to move back and forth between theory and practice.) The retreat was called "State of the Art," a title which prompts my own reflections on the State of the Art of CoPs in ACPE.

We are blessed as an association with an abundance of talented, smart, and generous members. Who do you think deserves special recognition?
ACPE is seeking nominations for the following awards: Distinguished Service Award, Helen Flanders Dunbar Award, Inspiration Award, Emerging Leader Award, and Emeritus Educator.
The deadline to submit a nomination is August 15, 2019.

| ACPE Certified Educators attend ICPCC in Malaysia |
ACPE members attended the International Council on Pastoral Care and Counseling (ICPCC) conference in Malaysia, August 4-10, 2019. ICPCC is a membership organization founded in 1979 to use pastoral care and counseling to respond to current needs and situations facing people and communities in the world. Members hail from nearly thirty countries on six continents and are pastors, chaplains, professors, and authors. ICPCC celebrated its 40th anniversary during the conference.

For those who might not be familiar with it, the Mission Advance Program (MAP) fund was established in 1985 as an endowment fund for the American Association of Pastoral Counselors (AAPC). The MAP endowment was moved to the Foundation during the 2019 consolidation so that it might continue supporting the work of spiritually-integrated psychotherapists and pastoral counselors. It is now managed by the MAP Fund Advisory Committee of the Foundation for ACPE. This Advisory Committee made a bold decision at their recent meeting on July 17th. Rather than extending a call for applications for funding as originally planned, they have instead invited Russell Siler Jones and Jill Snodgrass to apply on behalf of the Spiritually-Integrated Psychotherapy (SIP) program for the full amount of available Mission Advance Program funds, up to $15,000.

There is a lot happening in the world of accreditation this summer! I am excited to share some news, a few reminders, and a bit of what to look for over the next few weeks and months.
The News
This past week, Trace Haythorn, Marc Medwed, and I were in Washington, DC for the regular meeting of the US Department of Education/NACIQI group. ACPE asked to be on the agenda to request an expansion of our scope of recognition to include provisional/pre-accreditation as a recognized, accredited status. Following the submission of our materials, we were placed on the Consent Agenda and approved unanimously by the committee. A huge thank you to Marc Medwed for his thorough and meticulous preparation of the required materials!

Many of you are deep into teaching a summer unit of CPE and are thinking about how to assist your students to bring this rich learning experience to a close. Budgeting and payments to ACPE for the opportunity to conduct those units may be the farthest thing from your mind. However, I have good news that was first shared at this past May's annual ACPE Conference in Scottsdale, AZ. Coming under the heading of "we heard you," in calendar year 2020 we will begin billing centers quarterly for the number of units actually conducted.

I want to take a moment to update you on the creative work the Curriculum Committee is engaging in order to discover the best ways to support our students, educators and the diverse settings where they serve. Our recent committee discussions acknowledge our association's lack of consensus about what constitutes a well-constructed curriculum and evaluation process. We are reading about and discussing best practices within Competency Based Education, seeing how current practices might inform the unique and valuable work we do as ACPE Certified Educators. We are also inviting outside experts to speak into our history and current landscape as we consider and reconsider ACPE curriculum design and assessment practices in light of our outcomes for learning.

I hope that everyone's summer is off to a great start! As we are continuing our preparation for the new process, we are excited to publish the sign-up information for small group Q & A sessions that will being on June 11 and will continue throughout the rest of the year as long as needed. These sessions are the opportunity to ask everything you always wanted to know about the new process and building your center's accreditation portfolio.

I got a nasty paper-cut
right where my writing callus used to be.
It bled; it hurt; it kept opening back up.
I showed it to my daughters.
They said in unison,
"That's no big deal Mom."
I sought out my son.
He just rolled his eyes.
Then I went to you.
You kissed it tenderly.
You told me it would be better soon.
You said to keep a band-aid on it, and not do any dishes--
that I could take some of your morphine if I needed it,
that it looked like I would get by without IV antibiotics.

According to Chinese Taoist belief, this day is when deceased ancestors visit the homes of the living. Families prepare feasts and set tables with empty chairs so that the living and the dead can share the meal together.
