UK Schools to Teach about Fake News
and Confirmation Bias
In the UK every child will learn about confirmation bias and online risks as a compulsory part of the Relationships, Citizenship and Computing curriculum as the government publishes new safety guidance for schools. Teachers will have to help children learn to evaluate what they see online, how to recognize techniques used for persuasion, how to identify potential risks and how and when to seek support. "Mueller Report": A Teaching Tool for Educators
This article from the Washington Post outlines how educators are using the “Report on the Investigation into Russian Interference in the 2016 Presidential Election” as a teaching tool so students can learn how Facebook and Twitter were used by Russians and others to “polarize American society and influence our election.” The article includes News Literacy Project’s materials for helping teachers lead discussions about the report. " I have more than 12 years of experience in Higher education in Egypt and am looking forward to gaining international experience in the coming years. I enjoy merging media literacy skills in my courses specifically in the practical ones like Graduation projects and Field trainings. Recently, I designed “Concept, Context & Content” in the methodology and approach section of a “DIGITAL LITERACY PROGRAM” that is funded by UNICEF. The program aimed to train around 35,000 young Egyptians between age 13 to 24 years on the 21st century skills that are needed for empowering youth, especially girls to become representatives of changing processes in the Egyptian community. NAMLE has released Snapshot 2019: The State of Media Literacy Education in the U.S. The purpose of this SNAPSHOT is to inspire dialogue and create momentum to support research, training, practice, and policy efforts needed in order to grow the field of media literacy more fully as we enter 2020 and beyond. Report: "Exploring Media Literacy Education as a Tool for Mitigating Truth Decay"
In a new report, the RAND Corporation surveyed the developing landscape of media literacy education. Through interviews with a dozen media literacy experts and a review of studies on educational interventions, researchers examined how media literacy is defined, what instructional resources are available, and how effective media literacy education is in guarding against the spread of misinformation. Educator Resource: Microsoft My World
BBC Learning and BBC World Service, in partnership with Microsoft Education has released a global media literacy program for educators and students ages 10 through 16, designed to help kids determine fact from fiction in the news. As students watch weekly episodes of the new television series, My World , they will be asked to participate in exercises that build their media awareness and apply critical thinking in order to evaluate a story’s accuracy and help them build an understanding of global affairs while differentiating fact from fiction. I’d Blush If I Could: Closing Gender Divides in Digital Skills through Education
UNESCO’s new publication, I’d blush if I could , shares strategies to close gender divides in digital skills through education. Produced through a collaboration with Germany and the EQUALS Skills Coalition, it contains three parts, a policy paper and two think pieces. The publication serves to engage conversations about the gendering of AI technology and the importance of education to develop the digital skills of women and girls, as well as men and boys. Pew Research Report: A Week in the Life of Popular YouTube Channels
A new report released by Pew Research Center analyzed every video posted by high-subscriber channels during the first week of 2019. The analysis found that children’s content – as well as content featuring children (regardless of the intended audience) – received more views than other videos. [ learn more ]
