The Northwest Campanologist
I hope you were able to attend one of the outstanding events in our Area this winter/spring. With clinicians Jason Krug, Lee Afdahl, Larry Sue, Ellie Hodder, Michael Glasgow, plus other instructors, I'm sure everyone had a great time ringing together some beautiful music. Now plans are beginning for the 2016 events. Snake River Handbell Conference in Nampa, Idaho, will have Kevin McChesney, and Siskiyou Summit Handbell Conference in Ashland, Oregon, will have Cathy Moklebust. As details for these and other events are available, they will be in the Campanologist as well as on our area website, area10.handbellmusicians.org.
Coming up October 23-25 this year is a new event for Coppers ringers - Coppers' Classic. It will be in Vancouver, WA. Check out the article below and information on our website.
Please forward this newsletter to your choir members and to anyone else who would be interested in all the concerts and events. Encourage them to subscribe to the newsletter. From the Chair's computer ...

May is quickly coming to a close, and our ringing season is winding down. Now is the time to take a look back on the past ringing season and assess what went well and where stumbles occurred.
It is never too early to begin planning for next fall based on how the past year panned out. Is your choir ready to step up to the next level of music? Spend time this summer looking for arrangements or compositions that gently move your ringers up a level. Were there techniques that just didn't click? Look for exercises that will help improve the technique and teach a few others, suggested titles include but are not limited to "Developing Coordination Skills" and "Developing More Advanced Coordination and Technical Skills in Handbell Choirs" both by Michael Keller, or develop your own exercises that will help your choir master those skills that caused them problems this past season.
Maybe you are struggling with the lack of ringers in you choir(s). Summer is a great time to plan a "Play with the Bells" workshop after a worship service inviting all members of your congregation to come and "play". This event would be a time to introduce potentially new ringers to the basic skills needed in ringing, allowing them to see what the fun is all about. Then sign them up for your first rehearsal back in the fall. Or, you could plan a "Come and Ring" Saturday morning workshop just before your first rehearsal back that includes your current ringers and anyone else interested in learning what playing in a bell choir is all about, sort of a "Bell Boot Camp".

Another great Siskiyou Summit Bell Festival
by Shosh Meyer, Oregon Chair
This year's director, Larry Sue, did a wonderful job of pulling together the mass ringers at the 2015 Siskiyou Summit Handbell Conference in Ashland, Oregon. An exciting highlight was a piece written by Larry, The Final Crossing, which included an outstanding performance by a local piccolo trumpet player. Diane Barnes, Coordinator, continue s to hold a well-organized conference that gives ringers and directors opportunity to make music, learn from good clinicians, and network with other bell musicians. Ellie Hodder served as Bronze Director giving the event a well-rounded opportunity for a wide variety of ringing abilities. Clinicians also included Carla Sue and David & Dian Ruder from California and Marlene Anderson from Washington.
Diane announced next year's Siskiyou Summit Bell Festival is April 29-30, 2016, with guest conductor, Cathy Moklebust.

A Ring in Spring
Gifts come in all kinds of packaging. On May 15 & 16, one gift came to the Greater Portland area in the form of a director with great talent and an incredible sense of humor. Thanks to Leanne Bilstrom and Lake Grove Presbyterian's Handbell Ministry, three choirs were presented with a two day invitational bronze level ringing event with conductor extraordinaire, Fred Gramann, that was capped with a free concert for the community. Fred and his wife, Nancy, were on a tour of eight events, the eighth to follow in Ontario, Canada. The church's sanctuary made a perfect setting for three tiers of full handbell choirs and enough room for the concert tables of Handbells Unlimited - the exceptional ringing duo of Beth Davidson and David Jordan. Participants in the event included Leanne's Covenant Bell Choir; David York and the Bells of the Cascades; and a bell ensemble drawn together by Ellie Hodder.
If you are interested in creating an invitational handbell event and want to know more about what it takes to create this kind of "musical gift," contact your State Chair for suggestions. Area 10 is always looking for ways to bring ringers together for a fun learning event.
