Western slope peaches, pears and apples are once again ripening beautifully and will be sold again
this year as a fundraiser to benefit the UMCE general fund. Every summer UMCE offers our
congregation access to some of the best fruit in the world, grown right here in Colorado.
The price this year will be the same as last year. Besides ordering for your own table, order
forms are located on the table in the Fellowship Hall for you to sell to your neighbors, friends and other family members. The more
orders we have, the more goes into our general fund.
Orders will be taken until Sunday, August 25th and payment is due when the order is placed. Fruit will
be available for pick-up on Sunday, September 8th in Fellowship Hall.

UMM Breakfast

UMM will kick off our fall breakfast schedule on Saturday, September 14. Geo-physicist, John Warn, has been investigating the existence of Sasquatch for some time and will present his findings in his presentation: "Sasquatch - Fact or Fiction?" Breakfast will be served at 8:00. Please note that we will be meeting on the second Saturday instead of the usual first Saturday.

ALL CHURCH WOMEN'S LUNCH

Please join us for an All Church Women's lunch on Wednesday, August 14th at 12:00 pm. We will meet
at Carolyn Hohne's home which is located at 269 Crest Drive, Idaho Springs, CO 80452.
We will meet at the church to carpool at 11:15 am. Please sign up on the Fellowship Hall list and indicate if you want to carpool and what food item you will bring.
Anyone who would like to hike the St. Mary's Glacier trail should meet at Carolyn's house at 9:00 am. This will allow a nice, slow, leisurely pace. The trail (3/4 mile - 1.5 miles round trip) is considered an easy hike, but it gains quite a bit of elevation in that short distance (400ft). Carolyn promises to take LOTS of breaks to catch your breath on the way up (it's over 10,000ft). The hike down is easy! You will be rewarded with a BEAUTIFUL mountain lake.....the ability to touch snow (if you want to)......a nice down-valley view of Mt. Evans and other mountain ranges...and the satisfaction that "you did it!". Anyone hiking should consider hiking shoes or good sturdy sneakers and bring water.

CALLING ALL USHERS, GREETERS & THOSE INTERESTED IN SUNDAY MORNING SAFETY PLANS

We will hold a brief workshop on Sunday morning safety on August 18 between services. Pastor Deb will bring some guidelines, based on Red Cross standards, we plan to be using moving forward. {The Trustees and the Administrative Council have been part of this work.} Ushers, greeters and anyone else interested are encouraged to attend.

DETENTION CENTER - CALL TO ACTION
|
|
To Our Church Family:
Members of the Church & Society Team at UMCE have been nudged by God to take action regarding the current situation within our country's detention centers. The most recent report issued by the Office of the Inspector General at the Department of Homeland Security on July 2nd, confirmed the conditions that have been cited in the news lately. (See

The conditions at the detention centers have become a humanitarian crisis.
UMCJustice.org shares: "As United Methodists, we believe that God has given us principles for how to live in a community. Central to Jesus' teachings, life, death, and resurrection is the Great Commandment: we must love God and love our neighbors as ourselves. (Matthew 22:35-40; Mark 12:28-34)
Much of the Bible is devoted to figuring out how to follow this commandment.
...We believe that in loving both God and neighbor, we must pursue God's command of justice, liberation and flourishing for all people. We must work for the civil and human rights of every person. "
We believe that children fleeing violence and poverty who are seeking asylum should be united with their families and sponsors while they await hearings on their cases, not taken away and imprisoned. But today, the U.S. government is holding thousands of children in detention centers across the country - and that number keeps growing."
Apart from being harmful to children, these policies are immoral and contrary to our Gospel mandate. The United Methodist Church has spoken out against them. It says, "We oppose immigration policies that separate family members from each other or that include detention of families with children." (

)
Because of our faith, The United Methodist Church calls for an immigration system that is rooted in the inherent worth, dignity, value and human rights of migrants. We advocate for the "elimination of indefinite detention, [and the] incarceration of children." (
Book of Resolutions, 3281

As such, we are encouraging members of our church family to let their voices, together with other United Methodists, be heard by those who can make a difference - our president and our representatives in Congress. UMCjustice.org has made this very easy to do. ECHO SUMMER LUNCH PROGRAM
|
|
|
UMCE has been given the privilege again this year to prepare meals for the EChO clients and volunteers the last week in June, July and August. Our remaining dates will be August 26 & 29.
Last year we prepared food for approximately 400 people during the summer months, and received very sincere appreciation from EChO. The ECho lunch program was started in 2010, and since then five area churches have been taking part in this program from September through May. Last year was the first time the lunch program was continued during the summer months. For some people, this is the only meal they might receive that day.

The author, a proponent of hopeful religion, shows us how to understand the sacred nature of the natural world and the unity with the spiritual world in the formation of human faith. Theology as Biography
"Humble me, Lord, no matter what the consequences."
"God, grant me the serenity to remember who I am."
"If your security is based on something that can be taken away from you - you will constantly be on a false edge of security."
All our theology must eventually become biography. The constant challenge in this life we call Christian is the translation of all we believe to be true into our day-to-day lifestyle.
Nehemiah 8:10 says, "The joy of the Lord is your strength." Few truths are simple, especially those of Scripture. But as we pursue them and participate in them more fully, they begin to reveal to us a life deeper and more integrated than we ever could have known otherwise.
It seems to me that there is something qualitatively different between knowing and just believing. Knowing in both the Old and New Testaments implies intimacy, deep understanding, and experience. It implies an element of participation beyond mere cerebral assent. It is belief which has mature and taken root, and has been translated from mere cognition to a new kind of power.
