We have exciting news to share from Washington STEM board chair,
Liz Tinkham!

“After a nationwide search, and reviewing a competitive pool of candidates, Washington STEM has selected Angela Jones to replace Caroline King as CEO.

It has been a challenging process with so many interested and highly-qualified candidates and yet, we truly believe that this is the best decision we could have made. We couldn’t be more thrilled that Angela has accepted the job. Her background in education, experience in various leadership positions and her deep commitment to equity and transformational change make her the perfect leader for Washington STEM and our next chapter.

One of the things that she spoke at length about was the need to listen and learn. In her view, this is one of the keys to ensuring a healthy organization and that the partnership between Washington STEM and our networks and programmatic partners is strong. Having spent the last 30 years in Eastern Washington, she brings that perspective with her and is committed to ensuring that all voices are heard.”

Angela began her role on August 1st as CEO with Washington STEM. Snohomish STEM Network is looking forward to working with Angela to continue expanding awareness and access to STEM careers!
Community Transit WITI/STEM Tour
On Friday, July 19, 2019, Community Transit welcomed Northwest SBTRC , and two students from Henry M. Jackson and Everett High School to its facility for a tour. These two seniors are interning this Summer at Economic Alliance Snohomish County / Snohomish STEM Network ; they are also part of the USDOT Women & Girls in Transportation Initiative (WITI).

Community Transit staff, Jamyang Dorjee, introduced the group to leaders at Community Transit and showed the students what it is like to run and work at a large transit agency.

" It is very eye-opening to see how much work it takes behind the scenes to get the buses up and running without complications. Everyone I met was amicable and caring. I hope one day I will be able to work in a similar environment."

- Ashley from Everett High School.
Workforce Board Staffs New Oversight Board
The Workforce Board was tasked by the Legislature to staff the new Workforce Education Investment Accountability and Oversight Board. The new Board was established during the 2019 legislative session to make recommendations on which workforce education priorities to fund as part of the Workforce Education Investment Act. The Workforce Board is working on nominations to seat the new Board. Snohomish STEM Network is encouraging our community to nominate business leaders for a board seat to have Snohomish County represented.

Empowering Girls in STEM on the Big Screen
The Angry Birds Movie 2 is set to inspire young girls to use science, technology, engineering and math to envision and create a better world. The Ad Council has joined Sony Pictures Animation and Rovio Entertainment in a new public service advertisements (PSAs) campaign, which is an extension of their She Can STEM campaign. The PSA directs viewers to @SheCanSTEM on Instagram to learn more about the campaign and resources for girls who are interested in STEM.

"Women make up half of the total college-educated workforce in the U.S., but they only constitute 25 percent of the STEM workforce, according to the U.S. Department of Commerce.i Research shows that many girls lose interest in STEM as early as middle school, and this path continues through high school and college, ultimately leading to an underrepresentation of women in STEM careers."
