2019 Ruffing Scholarships Awarded

| Ruffing Scholarship recipients thanked ACCA in July. |
Since 1979, ACCA has awarded four-year college
scholarships to high school seniors who have overcome disabilities to succeed in school and life. These awards are made as a tribute to Emily and Fred Ruffing, leaders of the group that founded ACCA.
The following students are current recipients of the scholarship, worth $4000/year over a four year period:
- Kyle Gatesman, 2nd year at Johns Hopkins University
- Rosy Sultano, 1st year at George Mason University
- Katherine Cespedes, 4th year at George Mason University
- Esraa Mahran, 4th year at George Mason University
- Molly McCracken, 3rd year at Longwood University

2019 ACCA Making a Difference Award
Victor Nguyen, a 2019 graduate of Annandale High School, received this year's ACCA Making a Difference Award for community service. Victor expressed his gratitude for the award at the July ACCA board meeting. Each year, ACCA selects a student who has given back to their community through volunteer service. Victor was president of the Key Club at Annandale, a volunteer with the ACCA furniture program, Inova Children's Hospital, and was awarded the title of Mason District Lord Fairfax. The Lord and Lady Fairfax Awards Program yearly honors two volunteer leaders from each Magisterial District in Fairfax County. The honorees are selected for their outstanding volunteer service in their home districts or for an act of heroism.
Victor will attend Virginia Commonwealth University this fall.

Homework Club News
ACCA is continuing its Good Neighbor project with Lutheran Social Services and we are looking forward to the fall.
We will begin to offer more structured direction to volunteers in working with parents and students who are non-English speakers. To help with this, we are planning a training session for volunteers on September 7th. It will be led by Karen Kleiber, ESOL Coordinator for Fairfax County Public Schools, who attends Little River United Church of Christ. There will also be a brief orientation that day for new volunteers prior to the ESL training. Details will be provided as the date nears. Then, on September 28, we will kick-off our fall sessions which will be the 2nd and 4th Saturdays of each month.

Annandale Pop-Up Park to Host Fitness and Fun Day
Stop by the pop-up park near ACCA at 7200 Columbia Pike on Saturday, August 24, 2019, from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m., and enjoy the Fitness and Fun Day. Join Park Authority staff for a morning of family fitness and fun. Enjoy a variety of interactive games, activities, and demonstrations to get everyone up and moving. Try your hand at disc golf, cool off on a water slide, practice your favorite dance moves with a live DJ, and more!
The Fairfax County Department of Transportation and Bike Ambassadors will be on hand to educate the public about biking in Fairfax and to host bike parking for any participants who bike to the pop-up park. The Annandale Volunteer Fire Department (AVFD) also will stage one of their emergency vehicles and provide fire safety education.

Bailey's Shelter News
An innovative approach for housing our homeless residents and helping them transition into permanent housing is scheduled to open in late 2019 in the Bailey's area. The new facility will be located at 5914 Seminary Road and will replace the existing Bailey's Crossroads Community Shelter located at 3525 Moncure Ave.
Several features of the new facility include:
- 52 emergency shelter beds to serve single adults, including four medical respite beds
- Approximately 18 personal living quarters
- Outdoor picnic and activity area
- 24-hour staffing, including guidance and counseling
- Hypothermia prevention program site, which operates from November through March, with a "no turn-away" policy during freezing temperatures.
The facility is designed to provide flexibility where multiple needs can be met at one location. It will provide both emergency shelter to meet crisis for single individuals who are homeless, as well as permanent supportive housing units to allow us to provide permanent housing with intensive services. These services are needed for individuals who have been homeless for a long time and have significant barriers that have prevented them from being independent in our community
In addition, the flexible space will be able to accommodate changes in the numbers of homeless and will allow for an increase in permanent supportive housing units as our
homeless numbers decrease.

The 2019 Annandale CROP Hunger Walk will be Saturday, October 19 at 8 a.m. at Lake Accotink Park. The Annandale CROP Hunger Walk raises funds for Church World Service's (CWS) hunger and refugee relief and development programs and for ACCA. Walkers collect donations to CWS from sponsors online or by check or cash.
A recruiters meeting is scheduled for Saturday, August 24, 11 a.m., at St. Barnabas' Episcopal Church, 4801 Ravensworth Road, Annandale.
Youth through grade 12 are invited to make posters to promote the Annandale CROP Walk and to learn about hunger and poverty. The posters should be 14" x 22" or smaller. Please mark the artist's name, age and church on the back and submit by October 10.

Sunday, September 15 at 7 a.m. - The Lincolnia Park Charity Triathlon will be held from 7 - 9:30 a.m. Register to participate or volunteer online. Proceeds support the ACCA Child Development Center and the Kisima Academy in Kenya. |

Food Pantry Help Wanted
The ACCA Food Pantry needs your help.
Volunteers are needed to fulfill positions such as grocery buyer, pantry stocker, pantry cleaner, grant reporter, and scheduler. Time commitments begin with just a couple of hours on a weekend. To volunteer or for more information on positions and scheduling, please contact

Donations to the program are collected through the ACCA churches and other local organizations who provide nonperishable food for the food pantry. The ACCA Food and Nutrition program provides groceries to needy families who are referred through Fairfax County's Health and Human Services office.

Ministry Updates
Family Emergency Assistance served 30 households including 66 clients in June, providing $19,839
in emergency aid for rent, utilities, medical and other assistance. Many families had employment, immigration, and health issues.
The Food Pantry made 50 deliveries in June, assisting 137 individuals. Fifty-five families at Bailey's Elementary received a supply of food for 3-5 days. The pantry received a grant from Alternative Gifts through John Calvin Presbyterian Church.
The Furniture Ministry made deliveries to 14 households that included 47 persons and completed 21 pickups in June. Twenty-seven volunteers helped these families which included several with single mothers, children, senior citizens, and people with special needs. The annual review and planning meeting will be held at St. Albans on August 24 at 10 a.m.
Annandale Meals on Wheels delivered a total of 1247 meals to 28 clients over 4 routes. This program provides meals to homebound elderly, disabled, or convalescing individuals unable to cook for themselves.
Transportation (Shepherd's Center-ACCA transportation program) provided 48 two-way rides and was unable to find drivers for two rides.
