Doreen Steidle (2018) continues to support the strengthening of democracy through her work as an election observer with CANADEM, Canada's International Civilian Response Corps. Ms. Steidle helped CANADEM assess Ukraine's compliance with international standards for democratic elections during its nationwide parliamentary elections in July.

Gareth Glaser (2017) is working to help protect children from gun violence. A new survey shows increased support for "smart guns," designed by companies like Mr. Glaser's LodeStar, as a necessary measure to protect children in homes with weapons.

Laura Murphy (2016) is working to advance civil rights on Facebook. Ms. Murphy released a second update on the civil rights audit that she is leading to help the platform fight discrimination and strengthen its policies.

Judy Perry Martinez (2015) will assume the presidency of the American Bar Association during its annual meeting this month. In a recent interview, Ms. Perry Martinez discussed the challenges and opportunities facing the ABA and the legal profession at large.

Anne Welsh McNulty (2015) is providing critical assistance to individuals leading transformative social impact ventures. Together with the Aspen Institute, Ms. Welsh McNulty announced the 12th annual John P. McNulty Prize Laureates, five extraordinary leaders who have worked to create social impact.

Vincent de Luise (2013) is helping bridge the gap between medicine and the arts. Dr. de Luise was recently featured in Eye World, the global magazine of ophthalmology, for his work to connect the humanities to medicine.

Samir Toubassy (2009) is gaining national acclaim for his writing. The Midwest Book Review praised Mr. Toubassy's My Nakba, describing it as "an extraordinary and highly recommended addition to personal, community and academic library...collections."

ALI Faculty Board Member Bill Alford (HLS) is working to promote the mission of the Special Olympics. Prof. Alford is the lead director and chair of the executive committee of the Board of Directors of Special Olympics International and detailed his efforts to support individuals with disabilities in a recent article
 
ALI Executive Committee Howard Koh (SPH) was the keynote speaker at Lawrence General Hospital's sixth annual Healthcare Leadership Summit. Dr. Koh discussed the social determinants of health and the impact they have on vulnerable patient populations.
