Dear UUSS Members, Families and Friends,
Happy December! Though it doesn’t feel or look like winter today, we can expect colder weather and we of course hope for winter rains to ease the California drought. Winter is coming!
UUSS is responding to an urgent request to provide Winter Kits for newly arrived refugees who are receiving resettlement services from the local office of the International Rescue Committee.
Most of these refugee families have arrived from Afghanistan following the Taliban takeover of that country. IRC staffers are swamped with the task of locating available and affordable housing in greater Sacramento’s expensive and very tight rental market, so they hope we can help with this very practical form of support.
You are invited to participate at the level of your ability, whether it's by collecting items for the kits, giving money, or signing up to assemble the kits and deliver them to IRC.
For details, please see the following article, updated from last Wednesday’s Weekly Message. If you bring items for the Winter Kits on this Sunday, Dec. 5, remember to allow extra time for slower traffic due to the California International Marathon, which causes detours for those who come to UUSS from Highway 50 or anyplace to the south of Fair Oaks Boulevard and J Street. We will also have a table on Sunday, Dec. 12, the final day for the collection. Many thanks for the support that has already begun coming in!
Yours in fellowship,
Rev. Roger, Rev. Lucy, and the UUSS Refugee Support Team
