New Historical Collection added to New York Heritage Digital Collections

The Delaware County Historical Association has recently completed digitizing the Sherwood Collection, a collection of correspondence and documents involving Samuel Sherwood (1779-1862), his second wife Laura Bostwick Sherwood (1790-1863), and members of their family. Samuel Sherwood served one term as a Federalist in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1813-1814, and practiced law in Delhi, New York from 1800-1830. The Sherwood Collection includes business and legal documents, personal correspondence, and family recipes.

One very interesting piece of this collection is the travel diary of Laura Sherwood, which documents an 1823 journey through upstate New York. Laura Sherwood's observations of different regions throughout New York State are fascinating, from the "uncommonly fine village" of Norwich, to the "infant growing city" of Auburn and the Finger Lakes Region, to the North Country, where she "almost expired from terror" on the Salmon River.

The Sherwood Collection was digitized and transcribed by the Delaware County Historical Association in partnership with SUNY Oneonta, and supported by an RBDB grant made available from SCRLC.

Unplug. Unwind. Step out in the Sunshine. -

In an effort to promote "Healthy work environments that nourish the mind, body, and spirit (from SCRLC's Plan of Service 2011-2016)" and in the spirit of last years' successful Healthy Libraries, Healthy Communities grant (check out any Wellness Webinars you missed), I would like to share something every Friday that addresses work/life integration.

The next book on my reading list is Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less by Greg McKeown (after this month's online Book Discussion read, Emotional Intelligence 2.0)

"The Way of the Essentialist isn't about getting more done in less time. It's not about getting less done. It's about getting only the right things done. It's about challenging the core assumption of 'we can have it all' and 'I have to do everything' and replacing it with the pursuit of 'the right thing, in the right way, at the right time'. It's about regaining control of our own choices about where to spend our time and energies instead of giving others implicit permission to choose for us."

Meredith Farkas reviews the book on her blog, Information Wants To Be Free, where she includes a Chronicle of Higher Education article on Five Ways to Say No.

Gifted Libraries
Lisa Peet, Library Journal, March 6, 2015. "Libraries have long held sales of deaccessioned or donated books once or twice a year, usually run by all-volunteer Friends of the Library organizations. Many have dedicated spaces or rooms where books can be purchased year-round. These in-house used bookshops are moneymakers for libraries, with stock that's often liberally seeded with last year's best sellers."  Read more...
