Matthew 22:15-22
Offered by Karen Laroche

Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly.(Colossians 3:16)

So often, we come to the Scriptures for study. Every now and again, it is wise to remember the importance of praying and meditating on the Scriptures, often called Lectio Divina.

Lectio Divina is a slow, contemplative praying of the Scriptures. Often it is accompanied by journal writing. Lectio Divina reminds us, that we, in our poverty, are the student and God, in great generosity, is both our teacher and our guide. Here we learn to listen and be receptive to the movement of God's indwelling presence. God does not so much reach out and grab hold of us; rather, God gently invites, welcomes and encourages us to grow.

To prepare- find a comfortable, quiet place and allow yourself to become silent. Just stop and be in the silence for a few moments.

If it is possible, light a candle. This is a special time for you and God.

The Practice
  • Turn to the text and read it slowly, gently.
Then the Pharisees went and plotted to entrap him in what he said.  So they sent their disciples to him, along with the Herodians, saying, "Teacher, we know that you are sincere, and teach the way of God in accordance with truth, and show deference to no one; for you do not regard people with partiality.  Tell us, then, what you think. Is it lawful to pay taxes to the emperor, or not?"  But Jesus, aware of their malice, said, "Why are you putting me to the test, you hypocrites?  Show me the coin used for the tax." And they brought him a denarius.  Then he said to them, "Whose head is this, and whose title?"  They answered, "The emperor's." Then he said to them, "Give therefore to the emperor the things that are the emperor's, and to God the things that are God's."  When they heard this, they were amazed; and they left him and went away  (Matthew 22:15-22)

For Reflection:
During your time with Lectio Divina what did you notice?
What was this prayer experience like for you?
Why is it important to both study and pray the Scriptures?
