Wisdom 3: 1, 3

ALL SOULS' DAY

"When we visit the graves and say the memorial prayers and tell the family stories over the bodies of the dead, we tell of the Christ we saw in them."
 -- Sr. Joan Chittister

Today is All Souls' Day, a day celebrated around the world.
In our Catholic tradition, All Souls Day is a day to remember, pray for, and commemorate those who have died.

Today, many find time to visit the resting place of their loved ones, bringing flowers or a special memento. Some spend time in prayer or share memories with those who were close to the soul who has passed. Lighting a candle and silently expressing your thoughts and feelings is a way to communicate with those we have lost.

Some creative ways to honor those that have gone home to God include building an online memorial page-- a way to keep your loved ones memories alive forever. This is a celebration of
life and a way to preserve memories for the future generations in your family.

You might also set up a memorial altar at home. This is good way to celebrate and honor your loved
one(s) especially if their resting place is far from your home and physically difficult to visit. Photos, candles, flowers, statues, gifts given and received, letters written etc. can be placed on the altar.

Another way to remember your dear one(s) is to have a feast in their honor inviting family and friends to celebrate their life. Sharing a meal as Christ often did with his friends and family.

And lastly, throughout the month of November, Mary of Magdala will have a Book of Remembrance available at the entrance to the sanctuary so that all may share the names of their loved ones who have passed into the arms of God and we will join with you to pray in community.

Let us keep the memories of those who have gone before us eternally alive with our love for them.

It is All Soul's Day. The souls of those that have passed "are in the hand of our God and no torment shall touch them... They are in peace." (Wisdom 3:1, 3)

Amen
