WHAT'S YOUR NAME?

One of the responsibilities of a Gabbai Rishon is to prepare the weekly Honours list for Shabbat services.

This list is used by the Honours Gabbai to identify congregants and guests who have requested or been assigned honours and to let them know when their honour is approaching and also by the Torah Gabbai Rishon to call up the honourees for their Torah Aliyah.

While some honours do not require the Honouree to be called by name, the Torah Aliyot do and our tradition is to call these individuals by their Hebrew name. Many congregants have expressed pleasure when we are able to do so without asking them to tell us their names as we are calling them up.

To facilitate this we have a membership list on the Bimah with Hebrew names that the Gabbai uses to look up a name but in many cases the Hebrew name is either not available or is incomplete.

We have recently received our annual membership renewals and in them is a section asking for our Hebrew names and Tribal affiliation. For many, this section already has the names and Tribe populated in the appropriate boxes. For others they are blank. This is an opportunity for you to  correct, complete or provide your and your family's names to complete this section of your profile. Please take a few moments to review and complete this important section.

Your complete Hebrew name is made up of your Hebrew name followed by your gender designator "ben" (son of), "bat" (daughter of) or the more recently suggested "l'beit" (from the house of) followed by your Jewish parent or parents' Hebrew names.

For example my Hebrew name is Naphtali Asher ben Yaakov Pesach v'Faige, but if I prefered I could reverse my parent's names and use Naphtali Asher ben Faige v'Yaakov Pesach.  The choice of which example to use is for you to decide. Either is acceptable.

In the case where your Father is a Kohayn or Levi we also add HaKohayn or Halevi to his name  to complete yours.

Your Gabbai team thanks you in advance for ensuring we have correct and complete records so we can execute our duties effectively and efficiently. If you have any questions or are not sure how to proceed, please contact me at [email protected]

Donations
There are many blessings that happen in all of our lives such as the birth of a child, grandchild, or great-grandchild; the engagement or marriage of a loved one; or a promotion at work or a volunteer award.  These events lend balance to times of sadness, such as the death or illness of a loved one. We at Kehillat Beth Israel are grateful for the opportunity to share these moments with you - to be a source of community in both times of celebration and times of sorrow.  Below you will find some of the events in our community from the last few weeks.  Please continue to share with us your happy occasions so that we may share them  here in the future.

Blessed are You, Lord our God, Sovereign of the universe
Who is good and bestows good

And in the spirit of gratitude, we also take this opportunity to thank the members of our community for their charitable gifts to the synagogue.  We could not do the important work that we do at Kehillat Beth Israel without your generous support. We are so thankful for your continued contributions that allow us to grow and thrive. Todah Rabbah!
