Expanding Dental Care in Africa
RSDM Helps Mandela Fellow Realize Dream

Thobile Mushana, founder of the nonprofit Dental Marathon in Africa, gives toothbrushes to school children.
In Africa, toothbrushing is not a priority for families struggling to survive, and dental care is often nonexistent, says Thobile Mushwana, a Mandela Washington Fellow who wants to start a system of oral health care throughout Africa. He visited RSDM last month, where academic and administrative leaders gave him advice on establishing clinics for underserved patients. "Participating in Thobile's fellowship gave our school the opportunity to support diversity and the development of new talents at a global level,'' said Dr. Herminio Perez, who coordinated Mushwana's visit. Become a Mentor

Alumni are invited to mentor students as part of RSDM's Care to Share program -- a no-cost way to support the next generation of dentists. There are many levels of participation, including welcoming students to spend a day at your practice, participate in an externship, or even just meet for coffee to offer tips and advice. If you have a specific area of expertise and would like to mentor a student, let us know. Ideas or questions?
