The noncredit program is designed for mid-level professionals at regionally-based companies and nonprofit organizations who want to develop their personal leadership skills. Six graduate students are receiving scholarships for the fall 2020 academic semester. The scholarships are made possible by the Johnson County Education Research Triangle, or JCERT.

Campus adopts newest air handling sanitation technology |
K-State Olathe prioritizes the safety of our campus community, visitors and vendors. The campus now has two air handlers that use ultraviolet class C light, or UV-C, to sterilize air circulated in the building, thereby improving air quality to occupants. This latest HVAC technology helps ensure our campus is safe for for work, class and professional development workshops. |

Virtual summer camp proves to be a 'dairy delight' for middle schoolers |
One-hundred Johnson County middle school students recently participated in a virtual summer camp designed to teach them advanced scientific concepts and introduce STEM-related careers.
Throughout the week, a chef taught participants about the science behind milk-based foods and provided hands-on instruction to make those items.

Exploring the intersection of business and education |
What does teaching and business look like in today's environment? A K-State Olathe faculty member is using a blog to explore those topics around the hospitality industry. The blog is for industry, students and academia to come together and discuss particular topics in a non-traditional outlet. Topics range from what some local business are doing during reopening, how race factors into classroom education and the workplace, when learning happens and more.

Haley Larson, Ph.D., joins K-State's Olathe campus as a teaching assistant professor of animal health. Larson will primarily teach courses in the M.S. in Veterinary Biomedical Science program. She also will help with professional development offerings around animal health that support the region's workforce needs.

Willie and the Salad Bonanza, Sept. 16 -- This contest challenges student teams in grades K-12 to grow the largest amounts of spinach, kale and lettuce in a single container over the course of 43 days. K-State will provide free seeds and contest rules. All competitors are invited to the food-related career expo during the judging on Nov. 14. Veterinary Webinar: "Bovine Surgery Case," Sept. 23 -- Matt Mieser, D.V.M., DACVIM, clinical professor and section head of livestock services in the College of Veterinary Medicine, as he discusses a particularly interesting case in which a cow needed surgery. The free lecture is from 3:30-4:30 p.m. Sept. 23 via Zoom. One Health Day: "Biosensors and the Future Impact," Nov. 19 -- Mark your calendar for Kansas City One Health Day from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Nov. 19. The event will be virtual. This year's topic looks at biosensors and how they are used in measuring biological, chemical and physical signs of health. Sila Samo recently gave her defense as part of the M.S. in Veterinary Biomedical program. Sila discussed Hendra Virus, which killed 30 horses and 1 person in Australia from 1994 to June 2020. She discussed the virus, which can jump from horses to humans, and how Australians and the U.S. developed a vaccine and response plan. |
