From the Chair's computer ...
Where has summer gone? The new ringing season is beginning in many churches, schools and community groups. However, in many locations around the country there are bells sitting in a closet collecting dust with no program in place for their use. You probably know about a few of those sets; help get them back into use through the National Office's "Back to Bells" program which the Areas are putting into action. In September, all around the country, there are free workshops designed to help get the idle bells back into service. Area 10 is hosting 7 one-day workshops that are located throughout the area. If you know of an organization (Church or School) that has idle bells PLEASE share the following links and information with them.
Each 4 hour workshop will be hands on and include the following topics: Recruiting ringers, Basic techniques, Basic maintenance, Creative use of handbells in worship, Ringing with less than a full choir, Basic rehearsal techniques and Repertoire selection (click here for flyer)

Back to Rehearsals
As the kids prepare for and restart the new school year, many handbell choirs are restarting after a
summer break. Dust off the bells tables and pack up the unsold garage sale items. There are some things that can make the restart more fun and more efficient.
It takes a little time to get you brain back in gear. Also, like a new year, we CAN make some new season resolutions.
For the Ringer
Belonging to a handbell choir is a commitment to the handbell 'team'. Being late or missing rehearsal altogether is very disruptive to the rest of the choir. If you accept the job of playing in the choir, please keep absences to a very minimum, and arrive early enough to rehearsal to allow the ringing to start on time.
Arrive with a pencil and gloves and get ALL equipment [bells, chimes, mallets, music, AND attitude] out BEFORE start time.
Get all equipment out for ringers who will be arriving at the last minute; perhaps they come straight from work.
For the Director
Please respect those ringers that arrive early. Please do not wait for the last ringer to arrive before starting; that is insulting to those who show up on time and encourages ringers to arrive later in the future.
Consider the starting time to be the down beat time. Arrive early enough yourself so bells can be set up early, music be prepared, assignments well thought out. Announce the first piece before you are ready to start so that all ringers can have the right piece in place and be mentally prepared.
Use the rehearsal time wisely. Keep the rehearsal moving without long breaks that loose ringers' concentration and encourage side conversations when ringers need to be listening to directions. Ringers join a handbell choir to ring!!! Use every minute of your rehearsal time to fulfill this desire and improve the choir's skills and cohesiveness. Make announcement time either at the end of rehearsal or well before the down-beat time to help insure no ringing time is lost.
Make sure you have subs for any missing ringers to keep rehearsals productive even if a regular ringer is missing.
Be sure to encourage your ringers with thanks for their time, concentration when ringing, and minimal conversation during rehearsals, and remind them to report any malfunctions of equipment. Show that YOU enjoy directing the music you make together.
