Ahoy Mates!
W
elcome to the 2019-2020 school year! On behalf of the Cool Cat staff, I hope that you have enjoyed a restful and relaxing summer! As I begin my second year at Daves Avenue, I am particularly grateful for the wonderful community of students, staff and families, and I am eager to see hundreds of smiling faces on the first day of school. Over the summer, I had the pleasure of attending a Project Based Learning (PBL) Conference with a team of teachers. We remain committed to incorporating learning opportunities and adjusting classroom environments to meet the needs of all students. In addition to rigorous classroom instruction, inclusive play during recess with support from Coach Rance and incorporating flexible seating into every classroom were huge successes from last year that should be celebrated. I would like to acknowledge that there were some community members concerned after witnessing the old chairs in a recycle bin on campus that had unfortunately been sprinkled with garbage. The chairs are in the process of being relocated to the LGUSD storage yard while we try to find them a new home or recycle them. If you have any contacts of organizations in need, please let me know! Helping our Cool Cats learn how to pay it forward is a beautiful life lesson. Due to your ongoing support, I am grateful that students at Daves continue to have access to programs including Science, Music, Wellness, Art and Technology.
Please join me in welcoming two new staff members to our Cool Cat family. Mr. Ethan Ducker, who previously taught in Soquel Union Elementary School District, was announced as Teacher of the Year in May 2019. Ethan looks forward to fostering a collaborative, creative, and safe space for learning that cultivates authentic relationships, critical thinking, and a sense of connectedness to student’s global context. In his free time, Mr. Ducker enjoys playing a variety of instruments, spending time with his family, and is an avid surfer. Mr. Ramil Ochoa, joining us from Union Elementary School District, hopes to further facilitate and offer inspiring learning opportunities that magnify the creativity and citizenship of children in the bay area. As a technology leader, Mr. Ochoa has led professional developments, implemented new programs, developed and modified curriculum maps, and facilitated interest and inquiry based projects. Outside of the classroom, Mr. Ochoa enjoys spending time with his family and fishing. Thank you Mr. Ducker and Mr. Ochoa for joining our family!

HOME & SCHOOL CLUB PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
|
|
Dear Daves Avenue Families,
On behalf of the
Home & School Club
(H&SC) I’d like to extend a very warm welcome back to our returning families and a big welcome to our new Daves Avenue families. We are thrilled to welcome all of you to our 2019-2020 school year! I am honored to be part of this amazing community at Daves Avenue and am very much looking forward to a productive and exciting year as H&SC President. I am entering my 7th year as a parent here at Daves, my son Nolan will be a 6th grader at Fisher, and my daughter Quinn is an incoming 4th grader. We have been truly blessed with outstanding teachers and staff here at Daves and are looking forward to yet another great year.
One of the things that makes Daves so special is the dynamic and dedicated group of parent volunteers that help make our school the incredible place it is today. I would like to give a huge shout out to all of our Committee Chairs and countless volunteers who plan, organize and execute many of the programs and events we have here at the school. We always welcome new volunteers so please reach out to any of us if you would like more information on available opportunities.
We also have an amazing 2019/2020 Board of Directors that I am pleased to introduce to you now:
Please join us at the Back to School Coffee in the MPR on Thursday, August 15th at 8:15 a.m. Chat with board members and committee chairs to learn about upcoming programs, events, and volunteer opportunities. More importantly, reconnect with old friends and make some new connections as well. We are also looking forward to seeing you at our monthly H&SC Information Meetings where we encourage your input and ideas. You can download our H&SC Calendar

We are asking for $400 per child but you are welcome to donate any amount that works for your family. 100% of your donation stays here at Daves Avenue and funds technology, supplies, flex seating, field trips, student enrichment, recess enhancement programs and much more. As we embark on a new school year, the H&SC is looking forward to working with all of you to find new and innovative ways to enhance the school experience for all our Daves families. Here’s to a great school year!

The Home & School Club is a parent, volunteer organization working on behalf of your students and our faculty.
DOLLARS FOR DAVES
is the annual fundraising campaign that keeps important programs, not covered by state funding and property taxes, at our school. We are working hard to maintain these programs but cannot do this without strong parental support! This year, the H&SC is contributing $455 per student.
We are asking for a donation of $400 per student.
ALL
students benefit from DOLLARS FOR DAVES and every dollar counts! Thank you!

With the support of our Home & School Club, the Safe Routes 2 School program
at Daves Avenue focuses on the education and encouragement of students and their families through grade-level specific learning opportunities and school-wide events.
Our goal is to increase the number of students and families who walk, bike, skate, scooter, and carpool to school, while building community and friendships.
A few reminders for the upcoming school year -
Find your Route
!
Whether you walk, bike/scooter or carpool, start to plan how you and your family will get to and from school each day.
|
|
Plan your Pick-up:
Make sure your child knows how they will be getting home from school each day and where they should meet their pick-up person - if that's a parent, a grandparent or a family friend/carpool.
|
|
|
Remember the
ABCs of the Drive-Thru
line. Please refrain from using your phone while in the drive-thru line. This can help limit the wait line. Blocking the drive-thru lane leads to a long back-up on our side streets and more congestion.
