How Can You Lose 300 Million Trees?
Umm, everything is bigger in Texas?

The Texas A&M Forest Service keeps track of trees in Texas with a regular tree inventory.  Chris Brown, inventory and analysis program leader with TFS,  and his crews look at permanently established plots spaced three miles apart, revisiting a specific Texas region every five years and monitoring 20 percent of that region every year.

Following the 2011 drought, TFS calculates that the state lost about 300 million trees, or 6.2 percent of Texas' nearly 5 billion trees. The drought persisted throughout much of the state well into 2014. How do you keep track of all the trees in a state bigger than France?

More Trees Are Good For You
Studies calculate tree benefits

Many studies have found that living near a green space - land that is partly or completely covered with natural vegetation - is associated with health benefits, including lower blood pressure, reduced levels of stress and anxiety, and an increased sense of general well-being.

Research has even linked green space with lower Medicare expenditures. What hasn't been clear from these studies, however, is whether all types of green space confer the same benefits. Or are some green spaces potentially more healthful than others?

Lack of Sleep Is Hurting Your Business
and could be killing you!

That's according to professor Matthew Walker, who is the director of the Center for Human Sleep Science at the University of California, Berkeley. His book, called Why We Sleep: The New Science of Sleep and Dreams has just been released. Lack of sleep has been linked to many diseases - from cancer to Alzheimer's - as well as obesity, diabetes, and poor mental health.

"Once you know that after just one night of only four or five hours' sleep, your natural killer cells - the ones that attack the cancer cells that appear in your body every day - drop by 70%, or that a lack of sleep is linked to cancer of the bowel, prostate and breast, or even just that the World Health Organisation has classed any form of night-time shift work as a probable carcinogen, how could you do anything else?"

It's a huge problem that affects us personally. And it also affects our businesses.

Wood for Water Desalinization
More efficient and sustainable method?

Water desalination technologies play a vital role in converting saltwater into freshwater in parts of the world where access to the latter is lacking, but there is plenty of room for improvement.

One opportunity for this lies in the materials used for water filtration systems, with scientists putting forward a wood-based alternative to the plastic-based membranes currently in use, with early experiments indicating a heightened performance to boot.

In developing their new wood-based membrane, scientists from Princeton University together with colleagues from the University of Maryland and the University of Colorado Boulder drew inspiration from the natural water circulation systems of a tree. More specifically, a tree's thermal stability and the way its pores allow for water and nutrient transport during growth offered the scientists a useful new blueprint.

Soggy Spring Hurting Post Oaks
"Rapid Decline of Post Oaks"

It's not Fall, but some Texans' trees are already starting to look like Fall trees. This summer, a number of Post Oak leaves are changing to brown and yellow colors.  But that's not just wishful thinking that cooler weather is here. It's a serious sign that many southeast Texas Post Oak trees are dying.

"Harris County, Burleson County, Brazos County, anywhere where the Post Oak is native, yes, we're getting inquiries from them," said Texas A&M Agrilife Extension Diagnostician Sheila McBride.  Inside the Texas plant disease diagnostic laboratory, employees use microscopes to confirm the issue. In many cases, they don't need to get that close.

Develop Your Employees
or they'll leave

Of all of the factors relating to successful employee retention, one of the most important is employee development.

An employee that feels secure and proud with how their career is developing will be a loyal employee. Unfortunately, this is an area in which a lot of business owner's struggle. There are a vast array of reasons that employers do not help their employees achieve their goals.

Why should you have an employee development program in your tree business? Why should you send them to the Texas Tree Conference?
